  1. FLUENCY FLUENCY hunt! Fluency Hunt adapted from Becky Reister, Madison County Teacher Leader

  2. Search through your grade level standards to find the word “FLUENT” as it relates to addition and subtraction.…..Highlight the standard!

  3. Let’s share….

  4. Let’s share…. • Kindergarten

  5. Let’s share…. • Kindergarten – K.OA.5 FLUENTLYadd and subtract WITHIN 5.

  6. Let’s share…. • Kindergarten • First Grade

  7. Let’s share…. • Kindergarten • First Grade – 1.OA.6 Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating FLUENCYfor addition and subtraction WITHIN 10.

  8. Let’s share…. • Kindergarten • First Grade • Second Grade

  9. Let’s share…. • Kindergarten • First Grade • Second Grade – • 2.OA.2 FLUENTLY add and subtract WITHIN 20 using mental strategies. • 2.NBT.5 FLUENTLY add and subtract WITHIN 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.

  10. Let’s share…. • Kindergarten • First Grade • Second Grade • Third Grade

  11. Let’s share…. • Kindergarten • First Grade • Second Grade • Third Grade- 3.NBT.2 FLUENTLY add and subtract WITHIN 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.

  12. Let’s share…. • Kindergarten • First Grade • Second Grade • Third Grade • Fourth Grade

  13. Let’s share…. • Kindergarten • First Grade • Second Grade • Third Grade • Fourth Grade - 4.NBT.4FLUENTLY add and subtract MULTI-DIGIT WHOLE NUMBERSusing the standard algorithm.

  14. Let’s share…. • Kindergarten • First Grade • Second Grade • Third Grade • Fourth Grade • Fifth Grade

  15. Let’s share…. • Kindergarten • First Grade • Second Grade • Third Grade • Fourth Grade • Fifth Grade

  16. Let’s share… • Fifth Grade – Critical Area #1 Develop FLUENCY with addition and subtraction of fractions…. • Critical Area #2 – …They finalize FLUENCY with multi-digit addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division… cont…

  17. 5th grade continues… • …They develop FLUENCY in these computations and make reasonable estimates of their results. • 5.NBT.5 – FLUENTLY multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.

  18. What does it mean to be fluent?

  19. From the September 2011 edition of “Teaching Children Mathematics” (NCTM magazine) “…a fluency approach to learning places a focus on developing and using mathematical strategies, with the goal of finding efficient, effective ways to apply known facts to derive unknown facts.”

  20. Handout

  21. Student doesn’t instantly recall 5+7…. …but knows that 7 can be broken down into two parts, 5 and 2, and applies that knowledge to derive the unknown fact 5 + 7 can be thought of as 5+ (5+2) (5+5)+2 10+2= 12

  22. How could this work for two-digit addition? 54 + 72How could students fluently solve this task?

  23. So, looking back at our “Fluency” findings, where was the last time fluency with addition/subtraction is mentioned in the Common Core?

  24. Last place…..fluently add/subtractis mentioned is….4.NBT.5 - Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm..

  25. What else do you notice about this fourth-grade standard? 4.NBT.5 - Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.

  26. First place"the standard algorithm" is mentioned….4.NBT.5 - Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm..

  27. Standard Algorithm • Is 4thgrade the first place mastery of the standard algorithm is mentioned?

  28. First place"the standard algorithm" is mentioned is….4.NBT.5 - Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm..

  29. Let’s map out the path on Common Core to help us get there.

  30. 1. Find the Math Standard Placemat for the grade level BEFORE the one you teach.2. Find Common Core Standards that support being fluent with addition and subtraction using the standard algorithm.3. Write each standard on a post-it note.4. Be ready to share.

  31. Question: What would happen if a grade level didn’t focus on leading the students to mastery of the standards at that grade level?

  32. FLUENCY

  33. FLUENCY We can’t go around it……

  34. FLUENCY We can’t go over it….

  35. FLUENCY We can’t go under it….

  36. FLUENCYWe have to go through it!

  37. Don’t get caught! The Standard Algorithm….. It’s in the fourth and fifth grade Common Core for lots of reasons!

  38. We’re the most important reasons!

  39. Let’s take a break!

  40. Kentucky Center for Mathematics • Kentucky Numeracy Project • http://www.kentuckymathematics.org/intervention/iKNP.asp

  41. Teaching Strategies • Number Talk • Dot Cards • Five Frames • Ten Frames • Arrow Cards • Tri folded Cards

  42. Number Talk • http://www.mathsolutions.com/videolibrary.cfm The first clip is an example of a number talk from a third grade classroom. This type of class discussion builds mental math computation strategies and offers many strategies for students to consider.
