  1. Interactive School Math 3 (ISM 3):An Online Algebra Program Denise Albrecht, Math Dept Chair, Granite City HS Breanna Hamilton, 8th Grade Teacher, Wilbur Trimpe MS Scott A. Walthes ROE 41 Director of Technology Joan Barrett ROE 41 Math Coordinator Handout @ http://www.roe41.org/handouts/scott/

  2. Why Are We Here? • To give cutting edge info to schools planning for Tech Stimulus grants • Share the results of our pilot so far

  3. Types of Computer Based Courses • Self-paced courses where students work independently at their own pace and all of the instruction is embedded in the program. There is no need for a content knowledgeable teacher • A static electronic textbook which is an exact copy of a hard copy textbook. (Kindle like) • An electronic textbook with interactive components used by a content knowledgeable instructor

  4. What is ISM 3? • ISM Course 3 is a technology based solution for the teaching and learning of Basic Algebra at the 8th Grade or early HS. • ISM Course 3 is called Course 3 because it will be the third of three Middle School courses • installs as a course on a Moodle server. Moodle is a FREE Course Management System (CMS). Moodle allows educators to create effective online learning sites. http://moodle.org

  5. Who is ISM 3? • ISM 3 is a product sold by Math Resources Inc. http://www.mathresources.com • MRI is 13 year old company located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada • Content for ISM 3 was developed by a team of members of the National Council of Teachers of Math (NCTM), and programmers from MRI Gail Burrill Jack Burrill Anne Collins Paul Dillenberger Dan Dolan Kay Gilliland Heather Godine Linda Gojak Rita Janes Susan Lee Karen Longhart Fred Longhart William Masalski Carey Bolster Patrick Vennebush Tom Bassarear Jennifer Bay-Williams Mari Muri Ed Nolan Mary Selcer Wendy Siegel Kris Warloe Terri Belcher

  6. Where is ISM 3? • ISM 3 is being used in several schools in Madison County including: • Wilbur Trimpe M.S. (Bethalto) 8th Grade – Course • Granite City H.S. 10th Grade – Credit Recovery • Venice Elementary 8th Grade – Supplemental • Collinsville 8th Grade – Supplemental • Madison County ROE #41 – Demo Site

  7. What Does It Like in the Classroom? This ISM3 course needs a math teacher to facilitate the course These are Middle School Students using full sized MAC laptops. Each student in this school have their own laptop assigned to them that they can take home if they have met district criteria. All content courses in the school are taught using the laptops. Here a student is sharing a solution with his classmates.

  8. Students still have and check homework. Pilot teachers are grappling with how to best handle the homework assignments and how to turn in and grade the assignments Students still take notes.

  9. The Granite City School District purchased a set of netbooks to be used for the ISM3 course. Students only use the netbooks during class.

  10. Teachers give instruction to the whole class And then support students as they explore parts of the lesson independently

  11. Students still collaborate on problems Granite City purchased mice so each student could use it with their Netbook

  12. Even is traditional classrooms with limited space These piloting teachers are finding a way to make it work.

  13. Why ISM 3? • Computer-based math curriculum • makes the transition from textbook-based learning to computer-driven learning easy & effective • Electronic textbooks can be edited continuously • Highly interactive approach to learning mathematics • gives students & teachers the power to dive right into math concepts • ability to explore and interact directly with them • New & effective means of fusing your technology & curriculum that requires little PD • Approach that transforms technology from a potential time-eater to a time saver

  14. Show Me ISM 3! • http://moodle.roe41.org • See sticker on your laptop for username and password to log in to the site.
