  3. 5 Reasons WHY It’s Difficult to Find Info on the Web 4. Cheating websites -Websites can easily fool search engines by claiming to have the information the user is looking so the search engine will post their website 5. The number of users - Popularity + size = slows down the web

  4. Advanced Search Tips 1. Avoid using search engines or directories when possible. -Bookmark accredited sites (.gov, .edu., org) -Faster 2. Use Boolean Operators or command symbols when using a search engine ANDor + NOT or –

  5. How to Use Boolean Operators Include AND or + when you want all the words in the search to appear in the website. (Boolean Operators must be ALL CAPS) Example: WeberHigh AND Utah or Skiing + Rocky Mountains

  6. How to Use Boolean Operators Include NOT or – when you want to eliminate certain websites Example: Christmas NOT Santa Claus or Keyboard-Piano

  7. Advanced Search Tips 3. Beware of “spacing” in search string. -No spaces between command symbols -No extra spaces at the end of a line in a search string 4. Search for phrases when appropriate - “Oh Say Can You See”

  8. Advanced Search Tips 5. Search for multiple words in order of priority -2 to 5 words listed in order of importance Example: surfing wind Oregon 6. After arriving to a website, use the Find features by pressing Ctrl + f

  9. Advanced Search Tips 7. Curtail bad URLs to the last back slash Example: www.morgan.k12.ut.us/faculty *If this website doesn’t open, delete /faculty and press Enter. The search will take you back to the website’s home page.

  10. Advanced Search Tips 8. Type the wildcard command * in a search string. -* means any letter - When you type letters before or after *, the search will find words with those letters and any letters that would fit in between. Example: col*r = color or collar network* = networks or networking

  11. Advanced Search Tips 9. Consider the meaning of the word you wish to search -Include at least two words in a search. Example: mouse rodent animal *If you only typed mouse in a search string, you would get websites about “mouse pad” or “computer mouse” or “mouse rodent”

  12. Advanced Search Tips 10. Include year and place restrictions Example: Twin Towers New York 2001 11. When searching for graphics and sounds include filenames -Graphics: .gif, .jpg -Sounds: .wav, .mid, .aiff Don’t include spaces “elephant.jpg”
