  1. Warm Up: 12/2/13 • Define the following terms from the “Elements of Thought” Wheel in your own words: 1. Purpose 2. Question at Issue 3. Information 4. Concepts

  2. Objective and DOL Objective DOL • SWBAT explain, create, and understand the use of 4 fallacies: 1. Appeal to Pity 2. Ignoring the Main Point 3. Hard-Cruel-World Fallacy 4. Using Double Standards • SWBAT provide an example of each type of fallacy and explain why it is this type of fallacy.

  3. Appeal to Pity • attempts to persuade using emotion—specifically, sympathy—rather than evidence • Examples: "I'm positive that my work will meet your requirements. I really need the job since my grandmother is sick" • "I should receive an 'A' in this class. After all, if I don't get an 'A' I won't get the scholarship that I want."

  4. Example Appeal to pity: video • Write what you see and how it makes you feel. • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gspElv1yvc • Why does this commercial show these images? • In your graphic organizer, write the purpose of using appeal to pity.

  5. Ignore Main Point • This occurs when someone refuses to engage in the main point. “moving” an argument away from the main point to something else without most people noticing. Example: Citizen: Why didn’t the US intervene when they knew that there were millions of people dying in Africa? President: What was happening in African countries was a huge tragedy. I’m sure all Americans feel badly for the deaths which happened unjustly there. Think-Pair-Share: Come up with an example from your own life of someone ignoring the main point. Why Would people use this?

  6. Hard-Cruel-World Fallacy •Definition: When a person is making this logical fallacy, he/she is insisting that the world is a difficult place to survive and that certain actions are justified BECAUSE of this difficulty. This fallacy is a way to excuse one’s one behavior Example: The school doesn’t give us books, my mom made me clean the whole house. I just didn’t have time to study, so I peaked off my neighbor’s test. Think-Pair-Share: Come up with an example from your own life of the hard-cruel world fallacy. Why is it used? To justify unethical behavior

  7. Use Double Standards 0-5: Double Standards • Not judging two people or situations by the same standards. examples: • “I know we will hire any man who gets over a 70 percent on the screening test for hiring Post Office employees, but women should have to get an 80 to be hired because they often have to take care of their children.” • The US threatens to use force if Iran has nuclear weapons but does nothing if Israel has them. Think-Pair-Share: Come up with an example from your own life of double standards. Why Would people use double standards?

  8. DOL • Create an example for each of the following: 1. Appeal to Pity 2. Ignoring the Main Point 3. Hard-Cruel-World Fallacy 4. Using Double Standards
