  1. Purposes of music videos Holly Martin

  2. Promotional • Promotional is basically to promote someone in a visual format. Many artists nowadays would be nothing without their image, the image makes the artists instead of the music, some people watch the video’s just to see how crazy the video actually is. For example, Lady Gaga would be nothing without her image. Here are some of her looks, http://www.vogue.co.uk/spy/celebrity-photos/2010/07/15/style-file-lady-gaga/gallery/65 http://www.youtube.com/user/LadyGagaVEVO Another who would be nothing without the image is rihanna, she is known to not actually wear much and has also been known for doing bad things in the press. Here are some of her looks, http://www.vogue.co.uk/spy/celebrity-photos/2011/09/06/rihanna---style-file http://www.youtube.com/user/RihannaVEVO

  3. Promotional-Events • You could also promote an artist by getting involved in events. For example, Fashions Night Out (FNO) was to encourage consumers to shop and support the fashion industry during the tough economic climate. Darren Criss sang the famous Madonna Song in the Video and it also feature lots of artists to encourage people to get out and shop. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSQg3Wn9ATQ

  4. Extension of income • Music video is also another extension of income. You have made your video which is making you money and now you need to try to get it on every single place that it could be to make you more money for example, in games. In Grand Theft Auto you were able to purchase music video’s and then play them on the TV inside your house on the game. Also things like airports, waiting rooms, shopping centres and downloads. You could even sell it to a TV show or Movie which would of course reach even more viewers. Basically anywhere that there is a screen you want to get your music video played on it.

  5. Extension of outlets A music video can be seen in many different ways, on DVD’s or Blu-ray, on a Television channel (e.g. MTV, Kerrang!) or on the internet (e.g. YouTube, Social Networking sites, Websites etc.) Most artists use a VEVO on YouTube for example TaylorSwiftVEVO, Blink-182VEVO, RihannaVEVO, LawsonVEVO, OneDirectionVEVO etc. It is very common for an artist to have VEVO nowadays but bands may also have a Facebook, a Twitter and a website. It is important to extend the outlets that you put your music video through as the more you outlets that you do put it through means an extension in income and promotion.

  6. Links to films or TV programmes • It’s also good to get your music video onto a movie or get it featured. Bond songs are the biggest for these, the one that is the most recent is Adele’s Skyfall which was featured in the the actual moviebut there is also olds ones like My Heart Will Go on by Celine Dion which is linked to Titanic which was made in 1997.

  7. Producers Strategies • There are 3 main producer strategies Major label ( Warner Music Group, Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment), Independent (4AD, Rough Trade, Domino) and Self Produced ( YouTube). Major Label- A major label is one with a lot of artist signed to them, for example Warner Music Group have 442 artists signed to them ( Angels and airwaves, Eagles, Rush) Independent Label- An indie record label is a record label operating without the funding of or outside the organizations of the major record labels. For example, Rough trade currently have 52 artists signed to them. ( Arcade Fire, Taken by Trees, The Strokes) Self Produced- Self produced is when you do it yourself without a label behind you, these are mostly found on YouTube as it is a worldwide platform and it is free. (Justin Bieber, Charice Pempengo, Darren Criss)
