  2. The History • 1975 – Division of Communications created • 1995 – First Study of Interoperability • 1999 – Task Force created and results given to Governor • 2001 – RFP prepared and released – not signed • 2004 – HS Grant funding begins for regional networks

  3. The History (Cont) • 2006 – First regional network activated. • Government Technology magazine – October 2009. Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman states “We started out by setting up regional networks with the ultimate idea that we would connect the regional networks and have a statewide system.” “We brought them all together. We outlined our goals.” “We’ll take our homeland security money that is coming from the federal government and put in a statewide interoperable communications system.” “Here is the other key: We had a very successful regional project….twenty five counties got together…… a lot of barriers dropped by the wayside”.

  4. The History (Cont) • 2007 – Funding for State network approved – System of systems • 2008 – RFP released and contract awarded to Motorola • 2009 – Create Governance Councils • 2009/2010 – Statewide system built

What are we doing now? • Motorola ASTRO25 • P25 digital trunked VHF land mobile system • 51 tower sites across the state • Tower sites are owned or leased by state agencies, NPPD and local public safety entities • Network is a combination of fiber, Ethernet and point-to-point microwave links.

  13. From a Users Perspective • Phased in process, due to size of project • Geographical challenges • Ease of scanning old low band system gone as Phases come on line • Impact on locals when go-live date happened • Training of staff • Noted improvements & getting rid of the “old”
