  2. Paragraph #1 • First message came to Muhammad ---meditating in a cave at the top of Mount Hira (outside Mecca) • It was a terrifying experience for Muhammad • Muslims believe Angel Gabriel came down and told Muhammad to proclaim the word of God

  3. Paragraph #2 • Muhammad’s first message = 610 A.D. • We know a good amount about Muhammad’s life (more than Jesus or the Buddha) • Some facts about his life have been embellished (some claim he cast no shadow) • Muhammad claimed he was a regular person God picked to spread His message

Paragraph #3 • Muhammad was born in 570 A.D. in Mecca • Father died before his was born and mother died when he was six • Raised by his uncle Abu Talib • Spend youth tending to his uncle’s herds of animals • Believed his work as a herdsman was a sign God picked him to be important (other past prophets were also herdsmen)

Paragraph #4 • Muhammad would have known about Christianity and Judaism through his work and conversations • Would listen avidly to discussions between Jews and Christians • This could be a possible reason he was dissatisfied with Arab religion • Arab traditional religion = many gods (with main god called “Allah”) • Many outsiders thought that the Arabs were savages without an organized religion

  6. Paragraph #5 • Muhammad at 25  married a rich Meccan widow = Khadijah • He had lead caravans for her • With his new wealth he was able to focus on prayer • Went out into the desert to contemplate and pray

Paragraph #6 • At 40 he began to preach his faith • Some of his religion was familiar to Arabs who knew about Christianity and Judaism • Most Arabs = accepted Muhammad’s assertion that Allah was the only god (not just the most powerful of the many gods they worshipped) • Meccan traders = didn’t like Muhammad’s growing power • Jews and Christians = didn’t believe Muhammad was for real • 622 A.D. = Muhammad and followers escape to the city of Medina • ----important event known as the Hegira (also spelled Hijrah) • ----Muslims see this as the beginning of the religion

Paragraph #7 • Muhammad began to elaborate on his message • Followers recorded his messages ---later collected into the Koran (holy book of Islam) • As followers grew------Muhammad and followers began to raid Meccan caravans • Battles took place between Muhammad’s followers and Meccans • 628 = Meccans lets Muhammad’s followers make pilgrimage to the Ka’ba • 630 A.D. Muhammad takes Mecca in a “bloodless victory”

  9. Paragraph #8 • Muhammad was in many ways humble and unfulfilled • Incurred wrath of wives • All of his sons died in childhood ----no heir • 632 made a pilgrimage to Mecca and then died • Followers were left with the task to spread the faith
