  1. The Slime Benjamin Adams

  2. The Slime • This is a game that is similar to the idea of The Thing but with a twist. It will still have similar elements to The Thing but will have more of a funny feel to it. Scientists in the Antarctic are confronted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of the people that it kills. • There are these ninjas in their temple in the snow with a blizzard outside so there are forced to stay inside until the blizzard passes. There where they are confronted by a shape-shifting slime that takes the appearance of a ninja so the other ninjas are then confused which one is an imposter. The only way to destroy the slime is to burn it rather than slice it with swords as it will just split into more slime. Instead of it being realistic, it’ll be cartoony with cel shaded graphics.Much like The Thing game here, instead of an alien imitation, it is a slime that can only be destroyed by fire. The Slime is in cel shaded cartoon graphics.

  3. Character Designs: Ninja • The ninja character from The Slime. The 1st picture is a digital overview of the 2nd picture: the concept art. Featuring black traditional ninja tabi boots and clothing, the sword of the ninja, hand plating to protect the hands and sleeveless arms to show this ninja's strength and muscles.

  4. Character Designs: The Slime • The Slime character from The Slime. Featuring the red gel-like substance that makes it look like slime and 'cute'-styled eyes to show that The Slime isn't horror but more calm and happy for the target audience: mainly the young, as opposed to The Thing's target audience: adults.

  5. Environment Designs: Outdoors • The snowy outdoors from The Slime. Featuring the view of the rocky terrain from a far, a snowy forest and the snowy hills covered by a fierce blizzard. It’s similar to the outdoors of The Thing as it was also snowy.

  6. Environment Designs: Hallway 1 • The temple hallways from The Slime. Featuring the white mist to represent the cold outdoors, traditional Japanese walling and wooden floors for the purity of the Ninja Temple.

  7. Environment Designs: Hallway 2 • Another one of the temple hallways from The Slime. Similar to the previous design, it features traditional bamboo walls. The cold outdoors is represented by the white mist that lurks from the entrance.

  8. Weapon Designs • The ninja sword and fire magic scroll from The Slime. The sword has a yellow hand cover around the handle to allow better grip. It’s similar to the sword from Ninja Gaidenas it has a yellow cover over a red cover. The fire magic is made of old paper with wooden handles. The symbol is the Japanese sign for fire, I believe.

  9. Constraints • The Slime is a twist game based from John Carpenter's The Thing (1982) where instead of survivors in a Norwegian camp fighting off an alien being that imposes on the living, there are ninjas in their temple in the middle of a snowy desert where they a stuck inside until the blizzard outside stops, and they find a strange gel-like creature that takes the appearance on the ninjas in the temple. The only way they can defeat it is by using their fire magic, like The Thing where the Thing can only be destroyed by fire.To the cultural aspects of this game, the way ninjas a portrayed could have issues with the Japanese community and their history. It could disrupt the confidentiality of actual ninja clans and portray the ninjas a fun act due to the entertaining style of the game. The target audience is towards children and adults who enjoy fun gaming for all ages. Their are concerns towards children however. For example, the use of weapons could encourage children who are easily influence by material. But the use of fire magic can support this by showing that weapons and magic are fiction. But if the parents of the children are too concerned of this, they do have the choice over their children to play this game. The representation of the characters, mainly the ninjas, could bring up some issues. The way ninjas have sleeveless arms to show their power could be against the traditional ninja fashion for it is normally full black. The representation of genders could be a concern but both male and female ninjas will where the same clothing so it is equal. But some people may believe that the female ninjas aren't feminist enough. Ninjas do derive from Japanese culture so the ninjas are usually Japanese. But the ninja characters are anime-styled with cel shading so they could be considered to be of any culture. There could be religious issues with this game. The ninjas are from the Japanese culture so this could be against over religions that believe ninjas are bad and impure. Plus, the use of fire magic could also be deemed as offensive because magic could be of religious beliefs so they could believe that ninjas shouldn't be able to use magic. The last is the intellectual property (IP). The Slime is based on The Thing. This game is for entertainment purposes and isn't suppose to be against any constraints. The idea of ninjas being stuck inside while a blizzard storms outside may not be recognized as a similarity to The Thing. But The Slime isn't against The Thing so as long as The Slime isn't against The Thing and doesn't copy The Thing completely then it's allowed. Another issue could be the eyes of The Slime are based on the eyes of Kirby, trademarked by Nintendo, which are supposed to make The Slime look less harmful so it fits the target audience. But eyes are simply 'cute' eyes so they are used in many other cartoon characters. The last issue could be the ninja characters. Their clothing is very similar to Ryu's clothing from Ninja Gaiden so this could be IP from the Ninja Gaiden franchise. However, not every aspect of Ryu's clothing is the same. The ninja characters' clothing is simply the usual gear with no sleeves so this cannot be against Ninja Gaiden. This may bring in the Fair Use Act as the similar clothing could mistake the ninja characters being recognized as Ryu from Ninja Gaiden.

  10. Evaluation • Overall, this projects seems like a success. There are a few improvements that I could’ve made. For examples, I could have included more character designs that were more complex than, say, The Slime. The ninja characters were fine as they are but I could drew a female equivalent. The environment designs were lacking variety. For I have 2 hallways and 1 outdoor environment design. Instead, I could have had 1 hallway, 1 outdoors with the temple design and 1 indoor view of maybe a training hall. Same applies with the weapon designs, for I could have included more variety, like throwing stars or nunchucks. The magic scroll isn’t much of a physical weapon but can be used to destroy The Slime. In that sense, it’s main weapon that is most important.
