  1. DPI Evidence 1:Positive Impact on Student Learningand DevelopmentService Learning Project“Homebound and Out-of-School Suspension Work Webpage Link” Penelope Power Paul LEED 6824 Dr. Gerald H. Jarmon

  2. Overview of SLP Our school regularly has students placed on Homebound Services due to health related and discipline concerns and Out-of-School Suspension due to discipline issues. Even though our District employs several people to conduct Homebound Services, there is no regular schedule of pick-up and delivery to the homebound students or returning the work to the school/teacher(s). There is no Out-of-School Suspension schedule other than teachers leaving work at our school’s front desk and the student’s family picking it up. Sometimes the work is not picked up, mainly due to transportation difficulties, and the work remains at the front desk until the student returns to school.

  3. My Service Learning Project addresses both of these issues by providing a specific forum in which work can be found, completed, and returned to the teacher thereby keeping the student up-to-date with his or her work while away from the school environment. Students who do not have a computer available at home but have Internet access may check out a laptop from our Media Center to use while out of school. If this is not available for whatever reason, the students and their families have Internet and computer access available at three libraries and several churches located throughout the City of Washington.

  4. So far this school year: 2012-2013 • We have four students out of school on Homebound Services; two are indefinite discipline placements, one is for two to four months, and one is scheduled to return in December. The last two are health related. • We have had 57 students out of school on Out-of-School suspensions (130 incidents) for a total of 272 days of lost instruction.
