  1. Student Induction Health & Safety Session DAVID MULLEN IoP HEALTH & SAFETY ADVISOR

  2. SECURITY • Number of entrances/exits to the IoP campus including rights of way. • Ensure passes are worn and visible. • Do not allow tailgating when entering buildings. • Extra vigilance required when leaving late or at weekends.

  3. CONCEPT OF RISK • Risk is when a hazard exists that could cause harm to yourself and/or others. • Where it is not possible to eliminate the risk, control measures need to be in place to reduce the level of risk. • Generally the IoP is a low risk environment when working in offices, etc. • Risk increases when working in laboratories. • Risk further increases in 1:1 interview situations with clients.

HEALTH& SAFETY • H&S usually receives a ‘bad press’ – usually in terms of stopping people doing things. • Safety is not necessarily about stopping people working but to enable performance of their work in a safe manner. • Consult with your supervisors. • Follow departmental instructions especially regarding laboratory work. • Follow protocols regarding interview situations.

  5. ACCIDENTS • Report accidents, injuries, hazards in your working areas via your supervisor. • Accident/incident reporting is via the KCL on-line system, links available on: • IOP H&S webpage. • KCL H&S section of College website. • Reports concerning the IoP are subsequently forwarded from the College Safety Office to the IoP Safety Advisor for investigation, etc.

  6. NEDDLESTICK INJURIES • Wash injury site thoroughly with water. • Make the injury site bleed. • Report to Hospital A&E Department for treatment. • Ensure that your supervisor is aware of the incident and that an accident/incident form is completed.

  7. DSE – RECOMMENDED SEATING POSTURE (1) SEAT BACK ADJUSTABILITY (2) GOOD LUMBAR SUPPORT (3) SEAT HEIGHT ADJUSTABILITY (4) NO EXCESS PRESSURE ON UNDERSIDE OF THIGHS AND BACKS OF KNEES (5) FOOT SUPPORT IF NEEDED (6) SPACE FOR POSTURAL CHANGE, NO OBSTACLES UNDER DESK (7) FOREARMS APPROXIMATELY HORIZONTAL (8) MINIMAL EXTENSION, FLEXION OR DEVIATION OF THE WRISTS (9) SCREEN HEIGHT AND ANGLE SHOULD ALLOW COMFORTABLE HEAD POSITION (10) SPACE IN FRONT OF KEYBOARD TO SUPPORT HANDS / WRISTS DURING PAUSES IN KEYING
