Country Profile • Population: 39 Millions • Population Growth: 2.5% annually • Area: 947,300 sq km • Capital City: Dodoma • GDP Growth Rate: 7.2% (2008) • GDP per Capita: US$540 • Economic activities: Agriculture, Mining, Construction, Communication and Financial sector • Life expectancy at birth: 59.6 years

SELECTED PRIORITY AREA • Information Communications Technology • Justification • Will complement current efforts of establishing a vibrant ICT system in Tanzania • There is already an ICT policy of 2003 • Is an essential tool for the development of various sectors of the economy • It enhances efficiency and transparency including the time for doing business

  5. SELECTED PRIORITY AREA Justification (cont.) • It enhances trade within and globally • It increases employment opportunities • It enhances e-government, e-education, telemedicine, e-tourism, e-commerce, e-research, etc • Will speed up poverty reduction • Will create a knowledge-based society

SPECIFIC GOALS TO BE ACHIEVED Within the framework of the ICT Policy 2003… • To ensure there is an integrated ICT led socio-economic development • To establish an ICT infrastructure upto the grassroots level • To enhance ICT literacy and the usage at all levels • To attract direct foreign investment • It will enhance the role of R&D institutions

CONTEXT • Conditions • Low usage of application of ICT • Low awareness of the potential and application of ICT • Difficulties • Lack of adequate resources for ICT infrastructure development to the grassroots level • Power constraints in various parts of the country • Difficulties in disposing used computers • Lack of adequate human resources

SKILLS REQUIREMENTS • For design • Outsourcing (contractor) under the supervision of local experts • Implementation steps to address skills gaps • Recruit young scientists and send for further study for the management and the maintenance of infrastructure • Tanzania has embarked on an ambitious programme on ICT engineering, hard and software engineering for its young scientists • Secondary and Higher education reforms with a focus on Math, Science and Technology/Skills
