About the KTDA • Made up of 54 factories/limited companies and 63 processing units. • Buyers & consumers demanding tea sourced from sustainable farms e.g. UK supermarkets • KTDA working on a sustainable agriculture program using FFS (started in all factories) & the lead farmer model in partnership with Rainforest Alliance and tea buyers

  4. The RAINFOREST ALLIANCE CERTIFICATION PROGRAM (RAINFOREST ALLIANCE Certification PROGRAM matrix)

  5. What is rainforest alliance? • The Rainforest Alliance (RA) is an NGO that works with farmers on a program that leads to certification of their farms. • The Rainforest Alliance certificate is recognized by buyers & consumers as a sign of responsible farming 

  6. THE TEAM

STEPS to certification audit • Introductory session and diagnostic audit. • Board briefing and decision to proceed with program • Awareness & recruitment of lead farmers • RA trains the Staff, lead farmers, TESAs, clerks • Factory management & team train farmers on requirements • Lead farmers train on safe handling + PPE recruitment • Lead farmers do internal inspections on all farms • Factory management and team do final check • Apply for audit • External audit Process may take + or - 6 months (depends on implementation team)

  16. Critical Criterion 2.1 – CONSERVATION PROGRAM • 2.1 Critical Criterion: • Identifying all natural ecosystems • Setting up a conservation program 

  17. Critical criterion 2.2 – HIGH VALUE ECOSYSTEMS • 2.2 Critical Criterion: • No destruction of HVE from 1st Nov 2005 onwards • Mitigation of HVEs destroyed between 1st Nov 1999 and 1st Nov 2005

  19. CRITICAL CRITERIA 3.3 – hunting of wildlife Criterion 3.3: • No hunting of threatened species • Consider local legislation • Ensure ecosystem and species sustainability 

  21. CRITICAL CRITERIA 4.5 & 4.8 – Protection NATURAL water bodies • 4.5 Critical Criterion: • Do not discharge untreated wastewater into natural water bodies • Discharged water complies with the legal requirements • 4.7 Critical Criterion: • Do not discharge solids into natural water bodies

  22. 5. FAIR TREATMENT AND GOODWORKING CONDITIONS

CRITICAL CRITERIA 5.2 & 5.5 – Workplace opportunities and payment • 5.2 Critical Criterion: • No discrimination at the workplace • Equal pay, training, promotion opportunities and benefits • Freedom from political, religious, social or cultural influence • 5.5 Critical Criterion. • Payment equal or above minimum wage • Transparency on negotiated payment terms and rates • Piece rate work remuneration needs to allow for minimum wage/8h workday

CRITICAL CRITERIA 5.8 & 5.10 – WORKING MINORS & FORCED LABOUR • 5.8 Critical Criterion: • No employment of full- or part-time workers under the age of 15. • Employment of minors between the ages of 15 and 17 is regulated • 5.10 Critical Criterion: • Any type of forced labor is prohibited, • No withholding of part or all of workers’ salaries, benefits or any rights • No use of extortion, debt, threats or sexual abuse or harassment of workers

Critical criteria 7.2 – interests of local population • 7.2 Critical Criterion: • Implementation of policies and procedures for identifying interests of local populations regarding farm activities • Documentation and transparency of all complaints and comments received related to its relation with local population 

  30. Critical criteria 8.4 & 8.6 – pesticides and GMO • 8.4 Critical Criterion: • No use of agrochemical in the list of Prohibited Pesticides • 8.6 Critical Criterion: • No transgenic crops.

  31. 9. SOIL MANAGEMENT AND CONSERVATION

Critical Criterion 9.5 – Land Suitability • 9.5 Critical Criterion: • New production only on land with the climatic, soil and topographic conditions suitable particular kind and level agricultural production • Land use capacity studies need to demonstrate long-term production capacity • Cutting of natural forest cover or burning to prepare new production areas is not permitted
