  1. World War IIAt Home and Abroad As seen through Mrs. Gilstrap’s 5th Grade Class

In Class We Studied the War by: • Visiting a World War II art gallery in class • Interpreting political cartoons • Reflecting in our World War II diaries • Reading children’s literature such as Baseball Saved Us and Faithful Elephants to help us better understand the effects of war • Wrote poetry about the Holocaust • Created tableaus of the major events of the war

In the Beginning: • In groups, we made tableaus to explain some of the causes of World War II. • We also made tableaus to depict the event that led to the United State’s involvement – the raid on Pearl Harbor. • In our tableaus, we had to tell what we were. We also had to tell how we felt, what we thought, or what we wondered. Click on the picture to hear how we felt.

  4. Major Events of World War II • In groups, we had to become and “expert” on a certain event of World War II. • We had to write a one or two sentence summary about the event telling why it was important. • Next, we had to create a tableau about the event.
