  1. If I read a comic book in a shop without paying for it is it stealing? Is there more future or more past? Who’s ok at Maths… Can you explain to me what a prime number is.

  2. Starter • Is it possible to believe without seeing? • Can you think of any examples

  3. Belief Survey - Results Task 1. Analyse the results and explain why there is little belief in God but significant belief in other non-evidence based situations? Write a short paragraph to explain. • Belief in God 4% • Belief in the Devil 21% • Belief in Heaven 25% • Belief in Hell 29% • Belief in Life After Death 43% • Belief in reincarnation 25% • Belief in Ghost 55% • Contacting the dead 55% • Death the end 39% • Resurrection 18%

  4. There are three main ways by which the existence of things is proved: 1 – Personal experience – ‘I have seen it, so I know it exists’ 2 – Reliable evidence – ‘I have not seen it, but other people have convinced me that they have, so I accept its existence’. 3 – using a chain of reasoning to reach a conclusion (logic) – ‘I have not seen it but there must be a logical reason to believe its existence’.

  5. Christian Philosophy and Applied Ethics Brockwell Topic 1: Belief in Deity • Objectives: • to understand key terms for this unit • to begin to think about reasons why people believe/do not believe in the idea of a god

  6. The Nature of God. We’ll be looking at: • What’s this Christian God like? • Can we prove he/she even exists? • Does she/he perform miracles? • Did he/she intervene in the world through Jesus? • Does he still intervene through the Holy Spirit

  7. Key Words and definitions • Match the key word with the right definition. • Cut them out and stick them in your book. • Write them out.

  8. Fifty words is all it takes (apparently) I’ve heard it said that the difference between a person everyone thinks is intelligent and someone everyone thinks is ‘dumb’ is about fifty words. That is to say that intelligent sounding people use different words to describe things. Intelligent sounding people rarely say something is nice or good or that they are happy or sad. You could describe a peach as nice. But it is better to describe it as tasty, delicious or juicy.

  9. You could say something makes you feel really happy. But it would be better to say something is massive, enormous or gigantic or tiny, minute or miniscule. If you use such words in your examinations the examiner will feel more positively towards your paper. It will show that you have carefully considered your words. These words will create pictures in the examiner’s mind. Remember that examiners will be marking hundreds of papers so yours has to stand out.It doesn’t even matter if you don’t use ‘fancy’ words in real life. * The examiner’s only knowledge of you is what he or she sees on the paper they are marking.Try this examination question and remember to use words that are more descriptive than nice or good.

  10. Believing in God – basic definitions 1 Theist • A person who believes that God exists Theism • This is the belief in the existence of God. God is; • Omnipotent – all powerful • Omniscient – all knowing • Omni-benevolent – all loving Atheist • Someone who does not believe that God exists.

  11. Believing in God – basic definitions 2 Atheism • The belief that God does not exist. Agnostic • Person who is not sure whether God exists or not. Agnosticism • The belief that it is impossible to know whether God exists or not. Moral Evil • Actions done by humans that cause suffering. Natural Evil • Things that cause suffering but are not caused by humans

  12. Believing in God – basic definitions 2 Free Will • The idea that people are free to make their own choices. Numinous • The feeling of the presence of something greater than you. Conversion • When you give your life to God or change religion. Prayer • Communicating with God usually with words. Miracle • An event that seems to break the laws of nature and could only be caused by God.

  13. Key Words. • Sort it…

  14. Plenary • Write down 3 things you have learnt • 2 things you are unsure about • 1 question you would like to ask

  15. HOW CAN WE MAKE STRONG CONNECTIONS? Check within 1 hour (at the end of the lesson) 24 hrs later (the next lesson or day) 1 week later (long term memory) Month then 6 months

  16. Plenary What does equality mean? Give 3 things for which people might be discriminated against. Give examples of 2 biblical teachings about equality (1x Old Testament 1x NT) What is meant by evangelising? It is not possible to treat everyone equally Answer the questions

  17. Bruce Almighty Clip

  18. Bruce Almighty Questions • Is Bruce a theist, an atheist or an agnostic? Explain your reasons. • How would you describe Bruce’s attitude towards God? • What reasons does Bruce give or suggest for not believing in God. • If you were Bruce, what would be your reaction if you met God? • How would watching this film affect your view on believing in God?

  19. Belief • “I will not believe it until I see it for myself” • EVIDENCE is important for us as human beings • But we usually rely on a range of evidence when arriving at our beliefs • What do I mean???? • Here’s a task to help you
