  4. Types of Pattern • Conventional/Stylized • Man’s interpretation of objects natural or manmade • More animated • Less Realistic

  6. Types of Pattern • Abstract • No set, followed or repeated pattern. It does not have a motif taken from nature. • Used in more modern and contemporary designs

  8. Types of Pattern • Geometric • Made with the use of lines, stripes, plaids and geometric shapes • Used in modern and traditional designs

  10. Use of Pattern • Too much pattern can make a room too busy and uncomfortable.

  11. Use of Pattern • A room without pattern may be too stark or lacking in character.

To achieve a feeling of correctness in combining patterns: • Maintain a consistent mood. • Don’t mix formal naturalistic with geometric • Evaluate the placement of emphasis and avoid too many patterns in one area. • One bold pattern on a large area works better than 2-3 smaller patterns scattered throughout the room. • The size of the pattern should correspond to the size of the room and its windows. • Small scale patterns are often used in cozy rooms. • Large scale patterns for spacious rooms since these make a room appear smaller.
