  8. Amazing Words • Accommodates- to provide for, supply with • The grocery store accommodates vegetarians. • Refuge- is a shelter or protections from danger • They took refuge in an abandoned cabin during the storm.

  9. Amazing Words • Domesticated-a change from a wild to a tame state • People have domesticated many animals. • Contaminated-means to make impure or polluted by contact • The factory contaminated the water.

  10. Vocabulary • Bleached- dyed • He bleached his hair blond in the front. • Carcasses- bodies of dead animals • The island was covered with the carcasses of the animals.

  11. Vocabulary • Suspicions- conclusions • The detective had his suspicions about who was responsible for the break in. • Starvation- hunger • Every year, dozens of rabbits die of starvation.

  12. Vocabulary • Scrawny- bony • The cat was so scrawny it’s ribs were showing. • Decay- wearing away • The barn stood in ruins and decay.

  13. Vocabulary • Tundra- cold, flat, treeless land • The reindeer cross the tundra to their winter habitat.

  14. Spelling • -ant (important) • -ent (consistent) • -ance (instance) • -ence (difference)

  15. Spelling • Rule: • Use –ance when the first part of the word has meaning • Attend + ance • Use –ence when the first part of the word has NO meaning • Evid + ence

  16. Spelling Words ending in soft c (sounds like s), or soft g (sounds like j) -ent (magnificent, recent) Words ending in a hard c (sounds like k) or g (like in good) -ant (elegant, applicant)

  17. Word Analysis • Russian word origins: many of the words with Russian origins relate to the Russian culture. • Steppes- grasslands, plains • Czar-emperor • Mammoth- huge • Blintzes-pancakes filled with fruit or cheese • Samovar- large tea pot
