Romans The Gospel Outreach - 10:14-21 • Review • Chapters 9-11 are prophetic – What about the nation of Israel? • The question comes up, Since God has given the covenants and promises to Israel, (9:1-6) what has happened to the nation as a whole? • So far in Chapters 9 & 10 how has Paul responded to this question? • Not all of Israel is spiritual Israel • God sovereignly chooses on whom He will have mercy, making them part of spiritual Israel, and hardens whom He wants. • Israel sought righteousness through self-righteousness in the law and not through faith • Christ had done it all for them but they did not believe • Don’t try to bring Christ up from the dead or down from heaven so you can crucify Him again but believe in what He has already done • Verses 9 &10 are a chiasm • Whatever is in the middle of a chiasm is often there for emphasis • What is in the middle? • Believe – the emphasis is on the faith that they needed to have in what Christ had already done • Emphasis is not on confessing or calling on the Lord but on believing • When one confesses the Lord or calls on the Lord it is an outward manifestation of the inner heart of belief Lesson # 80 Jim Pool, April 29, 2007 1 of 5

Romans The Gospel Outreach - 10:14-21 • Steps in God’s offer of Righteousness – verses 13-15 • Saved by calling on the name of the Lord – one cannot be saved without calling on the Lord • Future-passive-indicative • Call – one cannot call without believing • To call for ones self, to appeal on ones behalf, • Aorist-middle-subjunctive • Believe – one cannot believe without hearing • To place trust or reliance upon, confidence in • Aorist-active-subjunctive • Hear – one cannot hear without a preacher • Hearing must come before belief • Aorist-active-subjunctive • Preaching – one cannot preach without being sent • One heralding or proclaiming • Aorist-active-subjunctive • Sending • To send or serve, a commission • Aorist-passive-subjunctive • Who is responsible for sending people out in ministry? These are assumed facts in the form of questions Deliberate subjunctive – to state a series of facts The Holy Spirit – He will use the local church but ultimately He is responsible for sending Acts 13:1-5 Lesson # 80 Jim Pool, April 29, 2007 2 of 5

Romans The Gospel Outreach - 10:14-21 • Beautiful are the feet of those who have been sent and are preaching – from Isaiah 52:7 • Did God send anyone to proclaim the gospel to the Jew? • Yes, He did - but how do we know? • Isaiah 52:7, 53:1-12 • The Jews knew of and were looking forward to a coming deliver • The Jews refused to believe the gospel – verse 16 &17 • Jews refused to heed the gospel – verse 16 • Heed - to hear under, to listen, to submit, to obey • Jews refused to believe the gospel – verse 17 • One must hear in order to believe • Because they refused to hear the gospel they were refusing to believe it • They heard but did not have ears to hear – they refused to believe what they heard – John 1:11 • The big picture - The issue was, don’t continue on in self-righteousness but believe in the righteousness of God - the righteousness of faith. Romans The Gospel Outreach - 10:14-21 • The question comes up, Since God has given the covenants and promises to Israel, (9:1-6) what has happened to the nation as a whole? • They did not hear and therefore believe • Someone was sent to them and the message was preached – Isaiah 53:1 - but they did not hear and therefore believe • Some would say we have not heard? We have never been told and have never had the opportunity to hear – verse 18 • They had heard the gospel, so don’t say you haven’t heard! • How do we know they heard? • Psalm 19:1-6 – natural or general revelation • Psalm 19-7-14 – special revelation • The Jews did know in advance of their rejection of Christ and the offer to the Gentiles – verse 19-21 • They knew and Paul quotes Moses in Deut. 32:17-21 • Who is referred to “by that which is not a nation” and “nation without understanding”? • The Gentiles • Were the Jews angry? • Yes – the Jerusalem council and others protesting Paul going to the Gentiles Lesson # 80 Jim Pool, April 29, 2007 4 of 5

Romans The Gospel Outreach - 10:14-21 • They knew and Paul quotes Isaiah 65:1 • Context is referring to Israel • The use of the quote by Paul here is using OT texts which apply to Israel as an analogy to refer to the Gentiles • In Romans 10:21 Paul says, “But as for Israel” – this would stand in contrast with the people previously mentioned, referring to the Gentiles • Verse 21 is straight from Isaiah 65:2 referring to Jews • Conclusion • The Jews are in a state of continuous rejection of God’s offer of righteousness • The fault is theirs – they have no excuse • They have heard the gospel but rejected it • God as a result, has set the Jew aside and is calling out a people from the Gentiles • God still loves the Jew despite their disobedience which will continue until the tribulation period • At that time all Israel will call upon the Lord and they will be saved Lesson # 80 Jim Pool, April 29, 2007 5 of 5
