  7. Overall findings • An excellent example of a well-performing R&I system. Notable strengths are: • Strong international standing in comparative international performance in most RD&I indicators. • Strong education base with excellent HE and research systems. • Strong public & private sector commitment to maintaining necessary levels of investment into education, research and innovation. • A timely response to prevailing economic conditions and challenges (the new national innovation strategy). • Unique Danish approach and culture for innovation/innovation policy - strongly reflects the country’s open and dynamic welfare society.

Overall findings • However, a number of concerns exist which may call for further policy attention: • A large and heavy Danish public sector, which tends to dominate the R&I system. • Insufficient growth of productivity levels and slowing down of economic growth. • Need for well-performing Danish companies to ‘raise their game’ from European level to global arena – esp. for Danish SMEs to exploit niche market opportunities. • A need to increase the visibility (performance and policy attention) of sectors of the Danish economy outside larger companies in the pharma, biotech and energy sectors • Policy instruments in a limited number of policy areas need further development in order for the RDI system to achieve its full potential.
