  1. SIDM EEB 2008

  2. Contents : Definitions -What does SIDM mean ? Customers-Range of products Technology * Impact process * Carriage mechanism * Platen-Gap * Paper Feeding Main Parts on a SIDM

  3. What does SIDM mean ? Definitions

  4. What does SIDM mean ? SIDM is an abbreviation of ... • Serial • Impact • Dot • Matrix FYI: „Dot matrix“ is more commenly known among channels/ customers than „SIDM“

  5. What does SIDM mean ? SerialImpactDotMatrix? • What exactly does it mean ? • Impact : • the print mechanism touches the media • Dot(s) : • result of the impact Until now, it seems to be easy !!!!

  6. 9-Pin 24-Pin What does SIDM mean ? SerialImpactDotMatrix? ...now things become more difficult: • Matrix: • SIDM-Printer are divided into two categories: • 9-pin and 24-pin printers. • The pins are arranged vertically on the head :

  7. What does SIDM mean ? SerialImpactDotMatrix? Arrangement of pins For this example, the printer has 9 pins

  8. Printhead Printhead Printhead Printout Printout Printhead Printout 24-Pin 9-Pin 2 x 9-Pin What does SIDM mean ? SerialImpactDotMatrix? In contrast to 9-pin printers, a 24-pin printer uses two rows of pin in a shifted arrangement. Thus the printed dots overlap and realise a higher quality. With EPSON-printers like DFX-8500, DFX-5000+ etc. there are 2x9 pin in the head. The pins have the same arrangements like those of a 24-pin printer (ie. parallel). 2x9 pins printers can perform Copy mode (2 dots impact at the same location), so that density is higher.

  9. What does SIDM mean ? SerialImpactDotMatrix? • Matrix: • the printhead moves along the paper horizontally and reproduces • dots according to a defined pattern. The result looks like this...

  10. What does SIDM mean ? SerialImpactDotMatrix? • Serial : • one after the other, each sign is produced. • Words consist of many signs... • ...sign by sign, • word by word • the document is printed in a serial way.... ...SerialImpactDotMatrix!

  11. Who uses a SIDM ? Customers Range of Products

  12. Who uses a SIDM ? • Target users : * Industry, Banks, Insurance companies, Logistics services …. • Purpose : * To print fast listings + copies

  13. Who uses a SIDM ? • Range of products : « X » = 9 pins , « Q » = 24 pins <3 digits> = 80 characters (A4) <4 digits> = 136 characters (A3) LX = 9 pin printer (Low-duty class) FX = 9 / (2x 9) pin printer (Fast print/ high-duty) DFX = 4x 9 pin printer (heavy-duty printer) LQ= 24 pin printer (Letter quality) DLQ= 24 pin printer (duty class)

  14. Who uses a SIDM ? 9 pins High volumes Medium volumes DFX-9000 136 column 1550 cps Copy 1+9 Low volumes FX-2190 136 column 680 cps Copy 1+5 FX-890 80 column 680 cps Copy 1+5 LX-1170II 136 column 337 cps Copy 1+4 LX-300+II 80 column 337 cps Copy 1+4

  16. How does a SIDM work ? Technology

  17. How does a SIDM work ? – 1. Impact process Spring Actuating Plate Head driving Coil Thermistor Pin Iron core Ribbon Ribbon Mask Paper • 1. Impact Process (1/2) Platen

  18. How does a SIDM work ? – 1. Impact process 2. Due to this charge, the actuating plate moves towards the head driving coil 3. The Pin, which is attached to the actuating plate, strikes the paper through the Ink ribbon, leaving an ink dot on the paper. 1. An electric charge is sent to the Head Driving Coil • 1. Impact Process (2/2)

  19. How does a SIDM work ? – 1. Impact process • Ok, but what is missing ? The Ribbon, of course ! 2 ranges of Ribbon : 1. Stationary : The cartridge doesn’t move, The ribbon moves only in one direction :

  20. How does a SIDM work ? – 1. Impact process 2. On-carriage ribbon cartridges : Two types of ribbon available : The black one and the colour one. The ribbon is installed on the carriage itself. For the colored ribbon, the ribbon moves upward or downward according to the color requested.

  21. How does a SIDM work ? – 1. Impact process For the color ribbon, 7 colors can be printed out :

  22. How does a SIDM work ? – 2. Carriage Mechanism • The process explained previously showed how to print one dot. • The print head is installed on a carriage which moves from right to left in order to print multiple dots : The carriage moves from right to left : • 2.Carriage Mechanism (1/1) Platen Print Head installed on carriage

  23. How does a SIDM work ? – 3. Platen-Gap Mechanism The user can use with a SIDM a lot of different papers : • continuous paper • Cut sheet paper • Enveloppe • Labels • Multi-part paper • …….. Depending on the paper Thickness, the user can adjust the gap between the Head and the Platen. This adjustment can be manual or automatic, it’s called the Platen-Gap. • 3.Platen-Gap Mechanism (1/2)

  24. How does a SIDM work ? – 3. Platen-Gap Mechanism • 3.Platen Gap Mechanism (2/2) By adjusting manually this lever, the gap between the Print Head and the Platen can be increased or decreased, according to the paper used.

  25. How does a SIDM work ? – 4. Paper Feeding • 4.Paper Feeding (1/5) The paper feeding mechanism has 2 functions : * Feed cut sheets using the friction feed mechanism A cut sheet is installed in the printer and is driven by friction.

  26. How does a SIDM work ? – 4. Paper Feeding * Feed continuous paper using a tractor feed : • 4.Paper Feeding (2/5) Continuous paper Tractor are used to accurate the paper feeding, can also be used to « park » the continuous paper while printing from another path. A tractor is used to feed continuous paper.

  27. How does a SIDM work ? – 4. Paper Feeding Using tractor feed, 3 combinations available : Push Tractor : • 4.Paper Feeding (3/5) Push Tractor in Rearposition Push Tractor in Front position

  28. How does a SIDM work ? – 4. Paper Feeding Pull Tractor : • 4.Paper Feeding (4/5) • Problem ! Using Pull tractor the following functions are notavailable : • Paper « Parking » • Reverse feed

  29. How does a SIDM work ? – 4. Paper Feeding Push/Pull tractor combination : • With this combination, paper feeding accuracy is the best • Also, following functions are available : • Reverse feeding • Paper “Parking” • Tear-Off • 4.Paper Feeding (5/5)

  30. Why SIDM? • Low TCO/ print-outs (as low as 20 (euro) cents/100 pages!!!) • Multi-part capability (up to 1 original +9 copies) • Long lasting print-outs (lasts up to 100 years) • Robust: Can work under rough environments (Hot, cold, dry, wet, dusty… No problem!!!) • Less maintenance (can handle rough use as components are harder than other technology) • Can handle continuous paper (Good for listing, continuity is intact) • Can handle media of varying thickness (Paper, multipart forms, cardboard etc) • Multiple paper paths (Freedom of desk space management) • Can handle cut sheets and continuous paper simultaneously
