  3. Overview • Reading • Writing • Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar • Phonics • Handwriting • Speaking and Listening

Reading Comprehension • Big focus in year 2 • Decoding and showing an understanding of • what they read • Understanding of vocabulary • Question types: prediction, comprehension (answer directly in the text/pictures), inference (using clues and pictures from text to answer a question i.e. maybe if……., I think….) • Reading records - boxes • Reading comprehensions and resources will be used at school regularly to assess

Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPaG) • Demarcate sentences with capital letters, full stops, exclamation marks and question marks. • Use commas in a list. • Use apostrophes correctly. • Use noun phrases for description. • Use subordination; When, if, that, because • Use co-ordination; Or, but, and • Use nouns, adjectives, adverbs and verbs • Use the correct tense (past and present)

  6. Phonics and Spelling • Phonics continued daily to recap and improve confidence on phases taught in year 1 • Common Exception Words focused on • High Frequency words • Spelling tests weekly – will be handed out and tested on Fridays

  7. Handwriting • Children will continue with weekly handwriting sessions but will begin to apply joins to all of their writing in class. • Children begin all sessions with fine or gross motor warm ups.

  10. Multiplication Key focus in Year 2 will be to understand the process of multiplication and to know by heart 2,3,5, and 10 times tables.

  11. Fluency • The children will use the 100 square to help them gain fluency with numbers to 100 and beyond. • Seeing patterns • Making links between numbers, shape, measure, fractions and so on.

  12. Addition and subtraction • The children need to recognise and understand place value , Hundreds, Tens and Ones. • Using mental calculations to add and subtract. • Confidently applying number bonds to 20 in + and - • Add and subtract a 1 digit number to and from a 2 digit number, two 2 digit numbers and three single digit numbers.

  21. Homework • New reading diaries • A literacy and maths task will be set fortnightly. • Books to be returned ready for new homework to be set. • Due in Wednesdays and given out on Thursdays

  22. At the end of Year 2, children will take SATs in: • Reading. • English grammar, punctuation and spelling. • Maths. • Variety of questioning types • Governments website • Not “tests” – how can we help you learn?
