  2. Significant figuresThere are two ways you can remember rules • Ignore leading zeroes. • 0.0079 • Ignore trailing zeroes, except after a decimal point. • 76000 • 76.00 • All other digits count as significant.

Atlantic-Pacific with significant figures • If a decimal point is Absent you start at the Atlantic. • Move to the left ‘til you get to the first non-zero digit. • All digits to the left are significant. • 760500 • If a decimal point is Present, you start at the Pacific. • Move to the right ‘til you get to the first non-zero digit. • All digits to the right are significant. • 0.05407

  4. Exponential notation takes numbers and makes them into a number between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of ten. • Some examples are: • 3605 = 3.605 x 103 • 0.098 = 9.8 x 10-2 • So to put a number into exponential notation: • Make the number into a number between 1 and 10 • If the number was above 10, your exponent is 10 to the power of how many decimal places you moved. • If the number was below 1, your exponent is 10 to the negativepower of how many decimal places you moved.

Observations:Statements of fact about what you see, feel, smell, taste, hear. • Qualitative observations are observations made with words… • The reaction smells like pumpkin pie. • The solution is royal blue. • Quantitative observations are those that are made with numbers (measurements). • Scientists seem to prefer these if at all possible. • The table is 47.2 inches long.

  6. Inferences: What you believe to be true, based on your observations. Observation: The man is frowning. Inference: The man is unhappy. Observation: The reaction is producing a gas. Inference: The gas being produced is hydrogen.
