  1. Education for Under Privileged Children in the US Lauren Huff CAS 100A Penn State Hazleton 2009 March 23, 2009

  2. Overview • Introduction • Freedom Writers Diary • Underprivileged students, and how they have succeeded with the help of their teacher, Erin Gruwell. • 3 Main Points • Discuss underprivileged children in general. • A major Program that helps underprivileged children- Teach for America. • What else is being done around the country to help underprivileged students and ways you can help?

  3. “The Freedom Writers Diary” • Written by Underprivileged students at an inner city school in California. • Entries from their diaries, all true events. • Erin Gruwell was their teacher, and never gave up on her students. • She inspired them to be what the are today.

  4. Underprivileged Children • Found throughout the nation • Inner cities • Poorer communities • Lower class • Students are lacking an education • “13 million children in the United States are currently living in poverty according to the National Center for Children in Poverty at Columbia University…because of their financial situation, these children will be denied a proper education.”

  5. Underprivileged Children • More students are getting into trouble • Suspended and Expelled • Millions are dropping out of High School • Only a Fraction of the students will ever graduate high school. • Underprivileged children deserve more of an educational opportunity.

  6. Teach For America • Non-profit organization • Assist Underprivileged students in inner cities. • Send educated college graduates to school districts across the nation that are in need. • Usually for two years • “Gives less fortunate kids a chance to learn at the same level as the rest of the country’s students”, states The Daily Campus”

  7. Other Programs/Foundations • Be A Champion Foundation • “School in Need” Program • Supply Educators with materials and supplies that are needed for their classroom. • Educators spend about $450/ year of own money on supplies. • LSI Backpack Program • Supplied 10,000 Backpacks to underprivileged children throughout the world • Filled with supplies and learning materials • Improve education from grades K-12.

  8. Helping Underprivileged Children • Scholarships out there to help students go to college. • Various Foundations that support underprivileged students. • Multiple programs that supply materials to students and classrooms.

  9. Conclusion • There are a lot of underprivileged children out there and they are not getting the education that they deserve. • Inner city students are being forgotten about in the education system, and it is a problem that is getting worse. • We all should support the foundations and programs that are helping underprivileged children because they deserve to have a good education, just like everyone else.
