  1. Septimius Severus, Caracalla, and Geta By: Chadwick Yip, Tim Nonet, Josh Portman, and Sydney Walsh

Lucius Septimius Severus 193-211 • Born in North Africa (145 AD) • He claimed the throne through military force after Commodus died when two others failed before him. • Made reforms to the Praetorian Guard, from 9,000 active troops to 40,000 active troops. • He took away the last remaining power from the Senate • Made major changes to the government: • Military gains power • To prevent rivalry he lowered the number of legions that could be under one general.

  3. Lucius Septimius Severus • His soldiers claimed him as Emperor and he rushed to Rome. • He declared his son Caracalla his successor. • His last words were: “Stick together, spend money on troops, and let everyone else hang”

  4. Marcus Aurelius Severus Antoninus Augustus Also known as Caracalla • He ruled from 198 A.D. - April 8, 217 A.D. • He extended taxes to all inhabitants of the Roman Empire • Ruled with his father until 211 • In 212, Caracalla proclaimed all free men in the Empire’s provinces to be citizens of Rome. • Was assassinated while urinating off the side of a road by his personal bodyguard for interesting reasons. (Jealousy or revenge depending on who you ask)

Publius Septimius Geta • Second son of Septimius Severus • Ruled 209-211 • At one time there were “three emperors” ruling Rome. • Septimus shared some power with his sons. • Was killed by Caracalla. • Most history of Geta was removed at Caracalla's command. • A rumor spread that the brothers wanted to split the empire into two.
