  1. Growing Through Praise Psalm 95 and 96 Page 933

  2. The Premise: That God understands what we are going through in life and He cares. I was hoping that, through the study of the Psalms, we will feel more connected to God and more willing to express ourselves to God and wait for His reply.

  3. Where Have We Been? Psalm 139 - God knows us and cares for us. Psalms 94 - cry for vengeance. Psalms 6, 38, and 51 - feelings of guilt. Psalm 88 - a cry of grief Psalm 79 - crying for mercy Psalm 22 – the desperation and rejoicing of David and Jesus as they chose to be faithful until the end.

  4. What is the Impact? For me this study helps me to connect to God on a more emotional and real level. It encourages me to share what is going on in my life and how I feel about these things.

  5. Getting Personal: What types of things do you take to God? Do you share your frustrations with God? Do you share the good times with Him? Do you allow God to be a part of your daily life?

  6. Your Standing Stones? Do you remember prayers that He answered, or moments that you felt especially close to Him? What would you have in your scrapbook or photo album? What events in your life lead you toward praising God?

  7. What is Praise? Praise is the act of making positive statements about a person, object or idea, either in public or privately. Praise is typically, but not exclusively, earned relative to achievement and accomplishment.

  8. What is my praise connected to? Is my praise most often connected to what God has done for me? What are the achievements and accomplishments of God that draw me toward praise? Do I praise God for who He is and not just what He does?

  9. Praise in Scripture: The NIV translates several Hebrew and Greek words in the English word Praise 293 times and 58% (169) of those are in the Psalms.

  10. Biblical or Cultural Praise? Too often our praise and praise songs do not mention why we praise God or what He has done. They more often focus on how I feel about what God has done, but the biblical model is the other way around. Biblical praise connects the action of God to reasons for focusing on God instead of ourselves.

  11. Psalm 95 On Page 933 We begin with the actions of the worshiper. Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. PS 95:2 Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song.

  12. Psalm 95:3-5 Page 934 3 For the LORD is the great God, the great King above all gods. PS 95:4 In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. PS 95:5 The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land.

  13. Psalm 95:6-7 6 Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the LORD our Maker; He not only created us but He loves us! PS 95:7 for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care.

  14. Psalm 95:8-11 Today, if you hear hisvoice, 8 do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah (The name means “quarreling”), as you did that day at Massah (The name means “testing”) in the desert, 9 where your fathers tested and tried me, though they had seen what I did. (Ex 17:7, Nu 20:13, DT 32:51)

  15. Psalm 95:10-11 10 For forty years I was angry with that generation; I said, "They are a people whose hearts go astray, and they have not known my ways." 11 So I declared on oath in my anger, "They shall never enter my rest.“ Why is this warning in a Psalm of praise? Praise is important for faithfulness.

  16. Psalm 96 Page 934 Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth. 2 Sing to the LORD, praise his name; proclaim his salvation day after day. 3 Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.

  17. Psalm 96:4-6 4 Forgreat is the LORD and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods. 5 Forall the gods of the nations are idols, but the LORD made the heavens. 6 Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and glory are in his sanctuary.

  18. Psalm 96:7-8 7 Ascribe to the LORD (NLT “recognize the LORD” the KJV variants – “give”), O families of nations, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. PS 96:8 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an offeringand come into his courts.

  19. Psalm 96:9-10 9 Worshipthe LORD in the splendor of his holiness; tremble before him, all the earth. 10 Say among the nations, "The LORD reigns." The world is firmly established, it cannot be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity.

  20. Psalm 96:11-13 11 Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it; 12 let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them. Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy; 13 they will sing before the LORD, for he comes, he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples in his truth.

  21. Thinking It Through: Does God’s return in judgment give you reason to praise Him? Who are you sharing the good news of God’s grace with? How are you doing with bringing God your offerings and attendance?

  22. Thinking It Through: Does praising God help center your life on what God has done and what He is doing? What tends to keep you from praising God? Would the Psalms be helpful to you?

  23. This Week: This week take a specific time to focus on what God has done and what He is doing and then take those thoughts to God in prayer.

  24. Going Deeper! Take your actions of praise deeper by keeping a record of God’s activity through journaling, scrapbooking, or other forms of standing stones.
