  1. Arithmetic Sequences Explicit Formulas

  2. Arithmetic Sequence Find the first term and the common difference of each: First term (a): 4 Common difference (d): = 9 – 4 = 5 First term (a): 34 -7 Common difference (d): BE CAREFUL: ALWAYS CHECK TO MAKE SURE THE DIFFERENCE IS THE SAME BETWEEN EACH TERM !

  3. The first term of an arithmetic sequence is (a) . We add (d) to get the next term. There is a pattern, therefore there is a formula we can use to give use any term that we need without listing the whole sequence. This is called an explicit rule: The nth term of an arithmetic sequence is given by: an = a1 + (n – 1) d The value of the term you are looking for The position the term is in (term number) First term The common difference

  4. You are looking for the term! Examples: Find the 14th term of the arithmetic sequence 4, 7, 10, 13,…… an = a1 + (n – 1) d a14 = The 14th term in this sequence is the number 43!

  5. You are looking for the term! List which variables from the general term are provided! Examples: Find the 14th term of the arithmetic sequence with first term of 5 and the common difference is –6. a = 5 and d = -6 an = a1 + (n – 1) d t14 = -6 5 = 5 + (13) (-6) = 5 + -78 = -73 The 14th term in this sequence is the number -73!

  6. You are looking for n! Examples: In the arithmetic sequence 4,7,10,13,…, which term has a value of 301? an = a1 + (n – 1) d The 100th term in this sequence is 301!

  7. Now you try! Make sure to write the appropriate rule for the sequence to help you!! a) Find the 16th term of the sequence 25, 23, 21, 19, 17 b) Find the nth term of the sequence 1, 5, 9, 13..........

  8. Activity # 1 Find the nth term for each sequence below. 1. 4,9,14,19,24................ 2. 3,5,7,9,11.............. 3. In the sequence 7,10,13,16,........., What term is 43? 4. What is the 10th term of the arithmetic sequence 5, 12, 19, 26.........?

  9. ASSIGNMENT A company offers Jeffrey a starting yearly salary of Php 240,000 with raises of Php 20,000 per year. What will be his salary on the 10th year?
