  2. 5S • The five Ss are activities that focus on creating orderliness in a facility. • 5S supports error proofing, setup time reduction, single piece flow, line-balancing, visual management, and preventive maintenance.

  3. 5S • Seiri • Sort or separate • Seiri refers to separating or sorting needed tools, parts, and instructions from unnecessary items.

  4. 5S • Seiton • Set in order • Simplify the arrangement • Seiton refers to setting things in order, creating optimal boundaries and locations for each item in a work area.

  5. 5S • Seiso • Shine • Sweep • Cleanliness • Seiso means that every day the work place should be cleaned, straightened up, and restored to order.

  6. 5S • Seiketsu • Standardize • Repeat seiri, seiton, and seiso at regular intervals • Seiketsu reminds people to conduct seiri, seiton, and seiso at frequent intervals in order to maintain the workplace in pristine condition.

  7. 5S • Shitsuki • Sustain • Self-discipline • Shitsuki refers to sustaining. This step focuses on ensuring that the organization has the discipline to sustain the habit of sorting, organizing, and cleaning.
