Memory Verse 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
The Upper Room DiscourseJohn 13-16; John 13:16, Servant-hood, Pt. 6
In the Passive voice to be brought under or held in bondage, 2 Peter 2:19; Titus 2:3.
Metaphorically Paul stated he would be willing to enslave himself to men if it would win men to Christ, 1 Cor 9:19.
It also conveys the radical change of the believer as a result of the gospel received. Believers who were formerly slaves to sin, Rom 6:17; Gal 4:3; are now set free from sin, Rom 6:18.
DOULAGOGEO - to make a slave, treat as such. Metaphorically to bring into subjection.
In 1 Cor 9:27 Paul tells the Corinthians how he must control his bodily desires in order to practice what he preached without hypocrisy.
It denotes:1) The condition imposed by the Mosaic Law, bound to sin, Gal 4:24; 5:1.
It denotes:2) The fallen condition of man which makes him dread God, Rom 8:15, and fear death, Heb 2:15.
E. The use of DOULOS: 1) Christ is the DOULOS of God. 2) The believer is a DOULOS of God and Christ.
E. The use of DOULOS: 1) Christ is the DOULOS of God. 2) The believer is a DOULOS of God and Christ. 3) The believer is a DOULOS to others.
1) Christ is the servant of God, Mat 12:15-21; Acts 3:13, 26; 4:27-30.
Acts 3:13,“The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified His servant-son (PAIS) Jesus.”
b) As a servant of God He became a servant to the Jews fulfilling the Father's promises. Rom 15:8.
Rom 15:8,“For I say that Christ has become a servant to the circumcision on behalf of the truth of God to confirm the promises given to the fathers.”
c) The precedence for His servanthood leading to the Cross is found in Phil 2:5-8.
d) Jesus demonstrated His servanthood of God by fulfilling the Father's Plan of salvation for mankind on the Cross. Mark 10:43-45.
Mark 10:43, “But it is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant; 44and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all….
… 45For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
Mark 10:43, “But it is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant; 44and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all….
… 45For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
e) In John 13:5-16, He displayed the degree of condescension and self sacrifice which a servant must possess.
“The apostle of a man is as the man himself.”That’s why Paul said “my gospel” in Rom 2:16; 16:25; 2 Tim 2:8.
f) Being a DOULOS of God bonds Him entirely with humanity's condition. He identified with mankind's subjection to the Law, sin and death, Heb 2:15.
As such, servanthood to God is uniquely expressed in Jesus Christ's obedience even unto death, Phil 2:8.
