Gender identity The persistent internal sense of being a man or a woman or some other gender. • We all have a gender identity • For cisgender people, this gender identity matches the sex assigned at birth Transgender people have a gender identity that does not match the sex assigned at birth. • Our gender identity may or may NOT match our appearance, our body, or others’ perceptions of us

Key Gender Terms • cisgender: a person whose gender identity is the same as or similar to their sex assigned at birth. • transgender: a person whose gender identity is different from their sex assigned at birth (umbrella term). • gender-nonconforming: a person whose gendered expression is somehow different from what is traditionally expected of their biological /assigned sex and/or gender identity. • Non-binary: A person who identifies as neither male nor female. NB people usually use they/them pronouns, but some may choose neopronouns like ze/zir or hir.

Minority Stress • Chronically high levels of stress faced by members of stigmatized minority groups  • SOGI health disparities explained by stress - stigmatization, bias, & oppression • The most well understood causes of minority stress are interpersonal prejudice & discrimination (IOM, 2011; Marshal et al., 2008; Meyer, 2003; 1995; Mirowsky & Ross, 1989; Pearlin, 1989)

  38. If you make a mistake…Apologize! • Clearly, it is not always possible to avoid making mistakes, and simple apologies can go a long way. • If you do slip, you can say something like: “I apologize for using the wrong pronoun/ name. I did not mean to disrespect you.”

Case Examples Case 1Bullying Assessment (Video) • Sally is a 42 year old Lesbian who identifies as cisgender and is having severe anxiety and depression symptoms, especially related to her work. She is a librarian at a local community library and there are major budget cuts and she feels people want her to be let go. Case 2 Lesbian Couple (StoryCorps) • Bobbi and Sandi Cote-Whitacre have been together for nearly 40 years and were married 5 years ago. Bobbi is part Native American and Sandi identifies as white and both are cisgender(ish). Sandi has been recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Case 3 Assessing Minority Stress (Video) Suzie is a 51 year old African American Queer and does not identify as totally cisgender. She has had very negative experiences regarding health and mental healthcare services. She has 4 other siblings and her mother just diagnosed with lung cancer and has a very negative prognosis. Suzie is experiencing a lot of sadness and has a Hx of alcoholism.

Joe is working on her undergraduate college degree and has just come out as queer to her mom. She is concerned about how this will impact her family and their support. She has been very anxious about this situation. Case 2 Trans Couple (Story Corp) • Vickie and Sissy Goodwin live in a rural part of Vermont and have been married over 46 years. Vickie is 64 and Sissy is 65, both identify as White. They have been dealing with Sissy’s consideration of starting hormones and possibly having feminization surgery. They have worked on Sissy’s wearing women’s clothes, but now Sissy is identifying as female. Case 3 & Case 4 Daniel (Video) • Daniel is 17 and having problems in high school. She is struggling with her sexuality and has started to use alcohol and drugs. Her academic performance is problematic and her parents wanted her to seek counseling. She identifies as White and as cisgender. Case 5 Joe (Video) Joe is a 48 y. o. gay male originally from Ireland. He tested positive for HIV about twenty years ago and his partner died of AIDS in the early 90s. He has a history of substance abuse disorder. He is having a ‘mid-life’ crisis.
