  2. There are three main movements during the Industrial Revolution: • Romanticism • Realism • Impressionism

  3. Romanticism • During the early 1800s, artists appealed to life as they believed it should be rather than it really was • Partially a reaction to the Enlightenment • Glorified emotion and instinct, overemphasizing nature and the golden past

  4. Characteristics of Romanticism • Imagination and emotion are more important than reason and formal rules • Intuition and a reliance on “natural” feelings are valued over controlled, rationality. • Emphasize a love of nature, and a valuing of the common, "natural" man

  5. Realism (1865-1890) • A new approach to literature and art during the mid-1800’s • Dealt with the realities of everyday life, and expressing observations of the social settings within their work

  6. Characteristics of Realism • Describes reality in detail • Focuses on characters • Events are usually plausible • Characters are related to each other • Through nature • Through each other • Through their social class • Through their own past

  7. Impressionism • An impressionist would try to evoke meaning and feeling, rather than to flatly describe • Very expressive, not literal

  8. Characteristics of Impressionism • Would establish the basis for European 19th century literature, art, and music • Forever shifted from realistic scenes, introduced a new type of expression • Contributed and shaped the art forms the modern world enjoys today
