  4. Earning High School Credits • Credits are earned each semester • 1.0 Credit for full-year courses • 0.5 Credit for one-semester courses • EXCEPTIONPhysical Education =0.25 credit per semester Must earn 4 credits to reach 10th grade status

Grades & G.P.A. • Semester Grades are Recorded on the Transcript (Your academic Record) • A semester grade is comprised of two quarters and the semester exam. • GPA is important for Post-High School Plans • F’s earn no credit and are NEVERremoved from the student’s transcript More information available on the website or in the student planner.

  6. 9th Grade MUST Take Courses • English 9 • Math • Science • U.S. History • Physical Education (unless PE Waiver Eligible) • Elective (Totaling 1.0 credits)

  11. World Language, Fine Art, and/or Business Requirement • A student must complete one credit from one of the academic areas above in order to graduate. • The 1.0 credit can be a combination of a half credit from 2 different areas.

  12. Physical Education/Health Physical Education • ½ credit required, 2 semesters • “Foundation of Physical Activity” is the Prerequisite for all other P.E. Courses • Remaining .25 credit may be selected from the following: Leisure/Individual Activities Competitive Team Games Walking for Fitness Physical Fitness & Yoga Zero Period Advanced Strength Training • Students who participate in SHS Sports may be eligible for PE Waiver, waiving the P.E. Requiremen. Health – To be taken 10th Grade Year • Required Course (#000911) – ½ Credit

  13. World Language Options: French 1 • German I • Spanish I • 2 years of a World Language is recommended for College Entrance • Students who struggle with reading may struggle in these courses.

Fine Art Electives MUSIC COURSES • Freshman Band • Freshman String Orchestra • Freshman Chorus Other music classes by audition only ART COURSES • Art I • Crafts • Ceramics I & II • Printmaking • Painting • Art Exploration • Drawing and Design 1 full credit (2 Semesters) of a Fine Art is recommended for College Entrance

Honors Courses The Honors Student: Does extra Reading…Thoroughly Answers Essay Questions…Fully Participates in Class Discussions…Does all Homework…Willingly does Research…Commits to Spending Time in Challenging Courses • Students may change levels within the first 3 days of the semester…with parent permission…Beyond this, changes must be teacher initiated and only for students who are struggling with D’s or F’s • Will have Required summer readings and/or projects

  18. P.E. Waiver • A way to complete one’s Physical Education requirement. • Students receive no credit and no grade. • Student may waive P.E. requirement by completing two full seasons of SHS athletics, cheerleading or marching band. • Physical Education Waiver Application and more information can be found on the SHS Guidance Website. • Students may not mix P.E. Waiver with Physical Education classes to meet the requirement. Must have 2 waivers or 2 courses, not one of each.

  19. Credit Flexibility • Credit Flexibility allows students to earn credit by demonstrating academic and skill level performance through a variety of educational options. • Approved credit awarded through these guidelines will be posted on a student’s transcript and counted as required graduation credit in the related subject area or as an elective. • A student must complete the Credit Flexibility Application and obtain approval PRIOR to beginning the coursework. • See the SHS Guidance website for more information and the Application

  21. Athletic Eligibility • All incoming 9th graders must pass a minimum of 5 classes during the 4th quarter of the 8th grade year • If a student earns less than 2.0 GPA during the 4th quarter of the 8th grade year, student will be put on an Academic contract • At SHS, must pass 5 classes (not including P.E.) the quarter preceding the season • FALL SPORTS: CROSS-COUNTRY, SOCCER, FOOTBALL, GOLF, VOLLEYBALL, GIRLS TENNIS

  22. PSEOP Post Secondary Enrollment Options Program • Get High School and College Credit at the Same Time • Students must apply and be accepted by the Post-Secondary Institution (requires specific GPA and Placement Test score) • Students must have a high school GPA in order to apply • Both student and parent MUST attend Mandatory Meeting on March 6, 2014 1:00pm or 6:30 pm SHS Auditorium

Hints for Parents • Support Student’s use of Planner • Check the PASS Program • Establish regular time and place for Homework • Check for teacher websites • Students MUST become “Active Studiers”… 1. “Reading Over Notes” does NOT work 2. Must make note cards or flashcards 3. Review often and out loud 4. Make Lists of materials to review 5. Moving around while studying can help

  24. Things to remember when selecting courses: • The high school has an 8 period day • Select English, Math, Science, & Social Studies • 5 class periods minimum (Not including P.E.) • Lunch 1 period • Electives • Maximum of 7 classes • Teacher recommendations are the best guide to choosing the right courses

  25. Scheduling Do’s & Don’ts: • DO look at YOUR History • DON’T select courses based on friends • DO look at your ability – realistically • DON’T select “easy” courses • DOlook at your future plans • DON’T expect to be able to easily change your electives next year

  26. Keys to a Successful Year… • Write down all assignments and tests (Planner) • Study/Review Daily (Notecards for Vocab) • Complete all Assignments • Take Notes • Check for Teacher Websites • Ask for Help from Parents, Teachers, Friends • Plan for Tests
