  2. What is TIM? A tele-interpreting machine (TIM) is a device used to connect health providers to an interpreter via video or phone

  3. Usage Turn on battery and monitor

  4. Usage (continued) Adjust the height of the TIM to suit the patient: • Raise machine: press the adjustment pedal down with your foot • Lower machine: press the adjustment pedal down with your foot and gently push the tabletop down

  5. Usage (continued) • Once the machine is on, the screen will display: Call, Contacts, Recents and Messages • Press Call

  6. Usage (continued) Select a language option. ASL and Spanish are available on the main language screen.

  7. Usage (continued) If you need a language other than ASL or Spanish, click “All Other Languages” and enter the language code from the attached card.

  8. Usage (continued) • Listen to the interpreter’s introduction • Record the interpreter number in CareConnect • During the call, speak directly to the patient and make sure that the patient is in view

  9. Usage (continued) • Turn the camera on by rotating the lens gently to the right • If the patient needs to disrobe, shut the camera off by rotating the lens to the left • Gently move the camera to allow the interpreter to see the patient

  10. Ending Calls • To end the call, tap anywhere on the screen to display the end button • Press the end button • Make sure to document the use of an interpreter and the interpreter number in CareConnect

  11. End of Usage Turn off monitor and battery and either wrap the cord around the metal clasp or, if needed, plug it in to charge.

  12. Charging Determining whether TIM needs to be charged: • Hold down the button below the battery-level lights • The lights will indicate how much battery remains(1 bar = lowest; 4 bars = highest)

  13. Charging (continued) To charge: • Toggle power switch on back of battery unit to “OFF.”

  14. Charging (continued) • Turn off monitor button • Plug power cord into outlet

  15. Charging (continued) When done charging, wind power cord around metal clasp

  16. Charging (continued) How often to charge TIM: • It is important not to charge TIM for prolonged periods and not to let the battery run down completely — charge TIM as often as you would charge a phone • When the battery level is at one or two bars, you should charge the TIM • When the battery level is at 4 bars, it is fully charged and should be unplugged • Overcharging TIM can damage its functionality
