The reasons an author writes is called the author’s purpose. • Authors of nonfiction write to inform or persuade. • Authors of fiction usually write to entertain. • The author’s opinion about a subject is called the author’s perspective. • Look for evidence like the author’s choice of words and details to help you determine the author’s purpose and perspective.

  3. Evidence Evidence Evidence Author’s Purpose and Perspective Tip: To identify an author’s purpose, ask yourself whether the author includes facts, reasons, or entertaining details.

  4. Read the story. Then we will use the evidence from the story to help us fill in the graphic organizer. When Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast of the United States in 2005, many people had to leave their pets behind. After the disaster, animal rescue organizations made a mighty effort to save many of the cats and dogs stranded by the storm. When local shelters ran our of space, shelters in other areas stepped in. Charter flights flew animals to shelters as far away as California.
