  2. Born December 25, 1642 at Woolsthorpe Manor in Lincolnshire, England Sir Isaac Newton

  3. In 1665, people were fleeing from the cities to escape the Great Plague. • Newton left Cambridge University to return to Woolsthorpe Manor where he developed revolutionary ideas about physics.

  4. Newton proposed laws that use math to explain the forces that govern everything in the universe Strongly influenced by Galileo and Kepler

  5. Also experimented with light and alchemy Invented the reflecting telescope

  6. His legacy • Died March 20, 1727 • Laws he proposed still serve as basis of modern physics • Called the Father of Modern Physics

  7. Net forces • Net forces can act on an object at the same time. They determine how the object will move. • When equal forces act on an object in opposite directions, the forces are balanced. The object is in equilibrium.

  8. If forces in one direction are greater than the others, the forces are unbalanced, and the object moves.

  9. An object in motion will remain in motion, and an object at rest will remain at rest unless acted upon by an outside force. Inertia – the tendency of an object to resist a change in motion Newton’s first law

  10. Newton’s second law • Acceleration – the rate at which velocity changes over time • Force = mass x acceleration
