  1. Caltanissetta The placewerewe live

  2. History It was founded by the Arabs in 800 with the name of Kalat-el Nisa (Castle of Women ). In 1087 the city was occupied by the Normans, and became a possession of the Grand Count Ruggiero, who turned it into a feud for several members of his family and founded the abbey in Romanesque style of the Holy Spirit, where there was a rock village and a Basilian monastery built on the ruins of a Roman farm of origin. In 1407 it passed to the Moncadas, a noble family from Palermo, where it remained for 405 years, until the abolition of feudalism in Sicily in 1812.

  3. During the rule of Bourbon (1735-1860), Caltanissetta became the capital of the province, and this fact drove the inhabitants of Caltanissetta, nisseni, away from the separatist ambitions of Palermo, whose armed bands, induced by Prince San Cataldo, eager for blood and plunder, to set fire to the district of Grace. In 1849 a delegation of Palermo offered, just in Caltanissetta, Sicily to the capitulation of the Bourbons after the revolution led by the Federal Ruggero Settimo. The mining disasters that have caused the deaths of hundreds of men are sadly remembered by the abandoned mines of Trabonella, Gessolungo and Deliella. Today Caltanissetta is a quiet and livable town.

  4. Traditions • In Caltanissetta September 29 is celebrated the patronal feast in honor of St. Michael the Archangel. When in 1625 the plague swept the city, the city walls were defended by guards, placed just there to prevent the access to the sicks, according to legend, St. Michael glared at one of these. • The week before Easter is called “Saint week”. It’s a very important event and a lot of tourists come to visit the town. There are some religiouses rites during this week, called Real Maestranza, Vare and Cristo Nero

  5. St Michele arcangelo According the legend, San Michele Arcangeloappeared to a monkannouncing he wouldhaveprotected the town. The statue of the Archangeldating back to the 1600,carved by Stefano Rivolsi, isbrught in a holy parade from the cathedral to the St. Michele sanctuary, whereitstays for a fewdays, while the pilgrims go in visit.Itistoldthat the sculptortriedmanytimes to shape the face of the Saint, butany time he wasunsatisfied . Aftermanyattempts, tired, he fellasleep and athiswoke up he found the face of the Saint just done.

  6. The Saint Week • Among the celebrations of Holy Week in the world of Caltanissetta are among the most beautiful. • They start with the Wednesday of Holy Week Procession of the Real Maestranza, a procession of 400 people of the oldest guilds. • The central and most significant, however, is the evening of Holy Thursday, when they come into the scene "Vare" or "Mysteries", a sort of battle on which are mounted impressive sculptures in wood, plaster and papiermache. • These groups account for more than a moment of the Cross, some of them, however, reproduce famous paintings, like those of the Last Supper and the Deposition.

  7. THE “REDENTORE” • Dedicated in 1900, the Redeemer, the monument stands on the summit of the hill closer to the city, Monte San Giuliano. • By architect Ernesto Basile Palermo, the monument consists of a square chapel, which is accessed by a few steps and which dominates on a circular pedestal is a bronze statue of the Redeemer, with his right hand raised as if to indicate a goal. • The stone is limestone and sandstone, grayish in color, with reddish veins. • The statue is 19 meters high, has a square base of side 6 and a half meters. • From the summit and along the road that leads you enjoy gorgeous views.

  8. To be a teen-ager in Caltanissetta… • Our warm weather let us go round by motorbike for a long period of the year. We can drive a moped since the age of 14. • We usually go to parties at home or at pizzerias or fast food restaurants to celebrate birthdays and other celebrates. • When we hang out on Saturday afternoon, we usually stay near a cafe called “Il cremino”. There’s a little square with shops, and we eat an hot dog or a kebab ( this one is a draft of yours… ) • Most of us do sport activities: swimming, soccer, basket, volley, dance, rugby, tennis and so on…
