  1. Renaissance Vocabulary

  2. Directions: • First, rate your knowledge of each of the 15 terms in the “Before” column using the following scale. • 1 = Don’t Know It • 2 = Kind of Know It • 3 = Know It • Next, write the definition or example from each word that follows.

  3. clergy • (noun) persons with authority to perform religious services • Example: Members of the church turned to the clergy for leadership.

  4. corrupt • (adjective) characterized by improper conduct • Example: The corrupt salesman cheated people of their money.

  5. humanism • (noun) an interest in the study of human nature • Example: During the Renaissance there was an increased interest in humanism.

  6. indulgence • (noun) an official pardon for sins given by the pope in return for money in the Middle Ages • Example: The sinner purchased an indulgence from the priest in order to be forgiven.

  7. Movable type • (noun) individual letters and marks that can be arranged and rearranged quickly • Example: The printing press used movable type in order to print.

  8. nobles • (noun) people of high birth or rank • Example: The nobles formed the upper class of society.

  9. Printing press • (noun) a machine for printing text or pictures from type or plates • Example: The first book printed using the printing press was the Gutenberg Bible.

  10. protestant • (noun) Christians who are not members of the Catholic or Orthodox churches; broke away from the Roman Catholic Church • Example: Christians that broke away from the Church during the Reformation became Protestants.

  11. realism • (noun) accurate representation without idealization • Example: The realism of the painting made it seem almost like a photograph.

  12. reformation • (noun) the term used to describe Martin Luther’s break with the Church and the movement it inspired • Example: The split from the Church during the Renaissance became known as the Reformation.

  13. renaissance • (noun) a widespread change in culture that took place in Europe beginning in the 1300s • Example: The Renaissance is also referred to as the Age of Enlightenment.

  14. salvation • (noun) access to heaven, in religious terms • Example: Christians that enter into heaven are said to have achieved salvation.

  15. secular • (adjective) non religious • Example: Studying human beings instead of religion is a secular idea.

  16. torment • (noun) extreme pain or anguish of body or mind • Example: He suffered great torment about what had happened.

  17. utopia • (noun) an imagined place or state of things where everything is perfect • Example: If we lived in a world with no violence, greed or hunger we would live in a utopia.
