  2. Learning Objectives • To understand the importance of freedom to make choices; • To identify the interrelationship between freedom and responsibility; • To learn about different kinds of responsibility.

  3. Determinism • Human beings - determined in nature and action by factors over which they have no control; • Conflicts with the common sense view that humans can make choices, are responsible for their actions.

  4. Freedom • Helps a human being become a moral agent; • Our free choices help us: • To shape our lives; • To form who we are; • To build character; • To create our identity; • To grow and mature.

  5. Catechism on Freedom “The more one does what is good, the freer one becomes. There is no freedom except in the service of what is good and just. The choice to disobey and do evil is an abuse of freedom and leads to the slavery of sin.” C.C.C. 1733

  6. Types of Freedom 1. Inner Freedom • refers to the freedom to be all we can possibly be. 2. External Freedom • refers to freedom of action, the freedom to do what we can possibly do.

  7. Modern Society on Freedom • Creates enormous amount of choices – danger of being enslaved; • Emphasis on “freedom of choice” – over “right to life”;

  8. Modern Society on Freedom • Absolute reliance on self - excessive individualism; • Mentality of “doing whatever I want to do”;

  9. License as freedom • Unbridled, excessive, undisciplined - abuses true liberty; • Disregards the rights and dignity of others.

  10. Threats to Freedom: External • Oppression • Injustice • Prejudice • Poverty • Tyranny

  11. Threats to Freedom: Internal • Ignorance • Fear • Habit • Inadvertence • Addiction

  12. Limits of Human freedom The amount of freedom we have to make choices is limited by our responsibilities to others.

  13. Personal responsibility • You can determine what kind of person you are and want to become; • It is up to you to become a person of good character.

  14. Moral Responsibility • Defending and Helping • Caring and Building • Protecting and Preserving • Sustaining • Treating justly and equally • Honoring and respecting

  15. Legal responsibility • To the laws and ordinances (community, state, country); • If a law is outdated – work at changing it and improving it;

  16. Family responsibility • Treating family members with respect; • Following rules; • Doing chores and duties.

  17. Community responsibility • Golden rule; • Participating in community’s activities and decisions; • Being an active and contributing citizen.

  18. Responsibility to customs, beliefs traditions, • Roots of the family, community, heritage, faith; • Do your best to respect and follow them.
