  1. I3 Hadron Physics – Joint Research ProjectsPolarized Nucleon Targets for EuropeSpeaker: W. Meyer 1.700 M€ • Scientific Case • Areas of Research • PIT´s • Project Planning • Budget Request

  2. Scientific Case Development within this I3HP focused on • Boost luminosity L = I · ntarget by factors > 10 • I = Beam intensity (particles/s) • ntarget = areal density of the target (particles/s) • Boost FoMext = ntarget · Pt2 · f2 • Pt = target polarization • f = pol. nucleons/all target nucleons • Boost FoMint = F · Tc-1/2 P2 • F = flux of polarized atoms into storage cell • Tc = temperature of the storage cell • Enable new types of experiment • continuous mode polarized solid targets in combination with 4π-particle detection

  3. Research Areas • Polarized Internal Targets • Dynamic polarized solid targets • Brute-force polarized solid targets

  4. Internal Polarized Gas Targets The developments address the following areas: • Development of high-gradient sextupole magnets, using: • rare-earth permanent magnetic materials (Ne-Fe-B) • superconducting (HTSC) wires. • Production of nuclear spin-polarized molecular H2 and D2 gas • feasibility studies of gas compression and storage at high pressure. • Development of intense sources of heavier polarized gas species.

  5. Participating Institutions

  6. Project Planning

  7. Budget Request • The total three year budget request (2004-2006) for the JRP amounts to 1.700 M€
