  3. Enlightenment influence • Ideas led 3rd Estate people (vast majority of France) to question French social structure • They feel all Estates should pay taxes

  4. Start of a revolution • France goes through a economic hardships • Taxes are raised for 3rd Estate (peasants)…this makes them mad! • Storming of Bastille • People of France storm the prison wanting weapons to take over gov’t/free prisoners • Symbolic…START OF REVOLUTION

  5. Peasants revolt • France was experiencing worst famine ever • People were spending 80% of income just on bread • Peasants resentful towards 1st and 2nd Estates for being unjust • Wanted to end Monarchy

  6. change happens • Gov’t responds: • stops Feudal system • Everyone must pay taxes • All men enjoy natural rights…life, liberty, property

  7. Riots and rebels • Rebels begin riots and kill any nobleman/clergy • “Reign of Terror” • Rebels hunt down anyone against riots • 30,000 ppl are sent to the guillotine

  8. Impact of revolution • Monarchy/Feudal Systems are gone • France becomes more democratic • Power now shifts more towards middle/working class
