Born 1564 (no actual date) in Stratford-upon-Avon, England • Baptized on April 26,1564 • Had two sisters and two brothers, he was the middle child • Father: John Shakespeare • Mother: Mary Arden • Married on 1557 • Had William seven years after their marriage • Went to King’s New Grammar School, which taught boys basic reading and writing • Had no definite proof of his education (when he started or when he ended) • Never attended a university • A bond certificate dated November the 28, 1582, that eighteen year old William married the twenty-six and pregnant Anne Hathaway • Had a daughter seven months later • In 1592 had twin boys • In 1596 one of the twins died • William applied for a coat of arms. Despite a lack of proof, he was granted his request • In 1599 he applied for his mother’s coat of arms to be added to his own • It is estimated that roughly fifteen of his 38 plays would have been written and performed by 1597 • over 20 years Shakespeare wrote more than a million words of drama • Died April 23, 1616, Stratford-upon-Avon, England • He wrote 38 plays ,154 sonnets, and 4 Narrative poems William Shakespeare

Born February 12,1809 • Had one sister and one brother, he was the also the middle child • Youngest brother died in infancy • Father: Thomas Lincoln • Mother: Nancy Hanks Lincoln • When Abraham was nine years old his mother died of Tremetol (milk sickness) at age 34 • A few months after Thomas married Sarah Bush Johnston, a Kentucky widow with three children of her own • She encouraged him to get a formal education (he would walk miles just to borrow a book from a neighbor) • When Lincoln was 22 years old he struck out on this own, making a living in manual labor • six feet four inches tall, Lincoln was rawboned and lanky, but muscular and physically strong • When the Black Hawk War broke out in 1832 between the United States and Native Americans, the volunteers in the area elected Lincoln to be their captain • After the Black Hawk War, Abraham Lincoln began his political career and was elected to the Illinois state legislature in 1834 as a member of the Whig Party • In about 1887 Lincoln became a lawyer • He became romantically involved with Anne Rutledge when he moved to Springfield • Before they had a chance to be engaged, a wave of typhoid fever came over New Salem and Anne died at age 22 Abraham Lincoln

  5. Abraham Lincoln served a single term in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1847-1849 • About a year after the death of Anne Rutledge, Lincoln courted Mary Owens. The two saw each other for a few months and marriage was considered. But in time Lincoln called off the match. In 1840, Lincoln became engaged to Mary Todd • In 1854, Congress passed the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which repealed the Missouri Compromise, and allowed individual states and territories to decide for themselves whether to allow slavery • Abraham Lincoln then became the 16th president of The United States of America in 1861-1865 • Died April 15,1865
