  1. National 4/5 Biology Section 2: The cell membrane cont’d

  2. Recap You are going to have to answer the following questions about what you have done so far What is the function of the nucleus? Where does protein synthesis take place? What is the function of a chloroplast? Where does aerobic respiration take place? What is the function of the cell membrane? What is found inside the vacuole? Why is a plasmid useful? What structures are common to all cells?

  3. We are learning to: Use the microscopes in a more complex way Context: flexibility and selective permeability of the cell membrane Success criteria: You can magnify and focus the microscope effectively You can use other scientific equipment whilst looking down the microscope You can explain what your experiments have shown you

  4. Experiment 1 Aim: to show through using a model cell that the cell membrane is selectively permeable Set up the experiment as demonstrated by your teacher

  5. Experiment 2 Aim: to show that the cell membrane is flexible Your teacher will demonstrate how to set up the practical, refer to the practical folder if required This is complicated if you do not concentrate on what you are doing

  6. The theory The cell membrane is flexible How did the practical involving the red onion/rhubarb show you this?

  7. Theory cont’d The cell membrane is selectively permeable What does selectively permeable mean? Lets small molecules pass through easily whilst larger ones may need carriers or digested to make them smaller to enable them to pass through How did the model cell practical show you that the membrane is selectively permeable?

  8. Mix freeze pair You are going to stand up and mingle around the room When asked to stop you must share something you learned today with your partner
