  1. Was Christopher Columbus a Hero? By Christopher Carlson CMP 230 Cambridge College

  2. Introduction • Claims that the world is round and that there is a quicker route to East Asia • Discovered central America and called the natives Indians. • He brought back a few natives with some goods and was declared a hero

  3. The Stylish Voyages • This voyage he brought 1,300 crew members of solders , farmers, craftsmen, and clergy. • Columbus didn’t bring any women during this voyage so rape was common • Columbus gave the natives a quota of gold to find per day if they failed they lost their hands. • He didn’t find much gold so instead he kidnapped about 500 natives to work as slaves but about half of them died on the way back.

  4. Columbus the Governor • Columbus returned to govern which didn’t last long • He refused to baptize the natives because then he wouldn’t be able to sell them as slaves • He repeatedly dealt with rebellious settlers and natives.

  5. Locked up! • Columbus was accused of mismanagement and was escorted back to Spain and put into prison. • 23 different witnesses explain that Columbus used torturous acts to scare settlers and natives. • Columbus was put into prison for 6 weeks then released and he persuade the queen for one last voyage.

  6. Conclusion • Till Columbus dying breath he believed that he explored Asia. • Columbus’s son wrote a biography about him about 20 years after death. • There is still heated debate on Christopher Columbus discovery .
