  2. THE SUBWAY • The transportation system of New York City is considered as one of the most complex of any city in the United State. • The subway is essential to New York City’s existence.

  3. THE SUBWAY • New York City’s is the largest rapid transit system in the world. • It is the second-oldest subway in the United States after the system in Boston. • In 2002, an average 4.8 million passengers used the metro each weekday.

  4. SUBWAY’S GENERALITIES • 469 stations • 4,379 subway cars; 2,111 with speedometers. • The average transactions per week is 1.1 million (1 billion per year)

  5. SUBWAY’S GENERALITIES • Opera music is played over the subway (Lincoln Center stop). • Union Square is ranked as the worst in terms of noise (95 db). • The average number of 340,000 people walks to work each day in New York City.

  7. FUTURE OF THE SUBWAY PROJECTS • 7 Subway Extension - Hudson Yards Rezoning and Development Program. • Fulton Street Transit Center. • Second Avenue Subway – SAS

  8. 7 SUBWAY EXTENSION • 1.5-mile extension of the No. 7 line to serve the Hudson Yards area. • From Times Square and continues along 41st Street and 11th Avenue, and then to a new terminal at 34th Street and 11th Avenue.

  9. 7 SUBWAY EXTENSION • October /2006, $2.1 billion • MAIN REASONS: • Lack of mass transportation Midtown West. • The Javits Convention Center expansion will not succeed without it.

  10. 7 SUBWAY EXTENSION - Benefits • Ensure the Future Growth of the City through Redevelopment of the Hudson Yards Area. • Provide Transit Services to Support Hudson Yards Redevelopment • Maintain or Improve the environmental Conditions.

  11. Fulton Street Transit Center • The Metropolitan Transportation Authority and MTA Capital Construction are building a new Fulton Street Transit Center. • It will incorporate six existing Lower Manhattan subway stations. • $880 million project.

  12. Fulton Street Transit Center • The project will improve access to and connections between 12 subway lines. • It will link NYC Transit facilities with PATH service and the World Trade Center site.

  13. Second Avenue Subway – SAS $1.13 billion cost per mile 8.5 mile subway project from 125th Street to the financial district in Lower Manhattan

  14. Second Avenue Subway – SAS • 16 new stations along path under Second Avenue. • Purpose to provide faster travel for current transit riders and relieve severe overcrowding conditions on Lexington Avenue line. • Construction time estimated to start in 2004 and last 17 years.

BENEFITS OF THE PROJECT • New York City’s Economic Priorities: • Retain/Expand diversified workforce • Improve competitiveness in economic cycles • Improve growth in outer boroughs • Improved commute to Manhattan. • 70,000 full-time jobs. • 600,000 riders will experience shorter commutes/time savings
