  6. Sensation and Perception: Hearing • Stimulus: Sound • Sound waves are vibrations of molecules that travel through the air • Amplitude • Wavelength • Purity • Humans hear only a portion of available sound range

  7. The Human Ear • Ears channel energy through three sections: outer ear, middle ear, and inner ear • Outer Ear: Pinna • Middle Ear: Hammer, Anvil, Stirrup • Inner Ear: Cochlea, basilar membrane

Theories of Hearing • Place Theory • Perception of pitch corresponds to the vibration of different portions (places) along the basilar membrane • Frequency Theory • Perception of pitch corresponds to the rate or frequency at which the entire basilar membrane vibrates Both theories are valid! Turns out that both the location of the wave (or rather, where the wave peaks) and frequency of the incoming waves
