  1. M2A3 Bradley Fighting Vehicle Model LTC Rene’ Burgess Final Project, MV4204 24 MAR 03 Briefing & Models available online at http://fp2k.redshift.com/rayburge3/x3d.htm

  2. Model Production • Base M2A3 Model • Improvements • Drive System • Track • Road Wheels • Drive Sprockets • Articulation • Turret • Gun • TOW • Back Ramp • Appearance Items • Bolts • Handles • Crew Door • Text • Issues/Lessons Learned

  3. Base Model • Vertices for most of the Model extracted from standard Army M2A3 model in .hps format (…which was extracted from a .flt format model) • This gave the physical outline of the outside of the vehicle….and a bitmap texture of a BFV to overlay on the outline. • Rather than overlay the picture, instead built a model based on color and physical geometries for better extensibility.

  4. Drive System Improvements • Tracks • Both double/single track sections, then rotated/ repeated to complete track • Road Wheels • Built based on photo’s using simple geometries and extrusions

  5. Drive System Improvements (Cont.) • Drive Sprockets • This was hard….tried a couple different methods before deciding to use repeating, extended/ translated/ rotated spheres to create drive sprocket…

  6. Articulation • Turret (Around) • Gun (Up and Down) • TOW (Up & Down)

  7. Articulation (Cont) • Back Ramp (Up and Down) • Easier to use two TouchSensors than to do a JavaScript boolean (…like double click…)

  8. Appearance Items • Skirt Handles • Bolts

  9. Appearance Items (Cont) • Crew Door • Text

  10. Lessons Learned • Texture Mapping • CylinderSensor • JavaScript Booleans • ClickSensor • Model Conversion Hiccups • Polygons & IndexedFaceSets • Need for Visual Modeling/Edit Tool • Right Hand, Right Hand, Right Hand…. • Internet Explorer v. Netscape during Interpolation

  11. Conclusion • Adequate M2A3 Bradley Fighting Vehicle completed / prepared for addition to SAVAGE Library • Process of building this model reinforced lessons of X3D design • Posting models on web good way to check functionality/ extensibility on other PC’s
