  1. Please DO NOW March 21, 2011 • Update your table of contents: • Weathering, Erosion, Deposition Definitions • Weathering Image (Do Now 3/8) • Do Now 3/9-3/10 • Satellite Images of Landforms • Types of Rocks Do Now • Building Sand Mountains • Topographic Map Quiz • Weathering and Erosion HW • Interactive Rock Cycle • Environmental Science Unit Cover Page

  2. Ecology Unit Cover Page March 21, 2011 • Page 81 – Environmental Science Unit • Decorate page 81 with words and images that relate to the study of the environment.

  3. Today’s Schedule March 21, 2011 Homework: Science News Report • Agenda: • Comp Book Update • Nature Walk • Nature Walk Card Sort • Essential Questions • What types of organisms interact in our local environment?

  4. Nature Walk March 21, 2011 • To begin the ecology unit you will collect information on the many items that are part of the O. Henry environment. • We will visit 4 locations on the school grounds. At each one, select items that are part of the environment. For each item selected complete a card with the following: • Name (if known) • shape •           texture •           color •           size •           sketch •           other distinguishing characteristics • You and your partner will create a total of 10 cards.

  5. Nature Walk Card Sort March 21, 2011 • Examine each of the cards you created. • With your partner, sort the cards into groups. Select your criteria to determine what types of groups you will use with your partner. • Page 82 – Record the groups you used and the names if each card in the group.

  6. HW – Science News Report March 21, 2011 • Create a news story about the things you saw outside today. Be sure to include a headline, the story, byline, and a graphic.

  7. Please Do NOW March 22, 2011 • Page 82 – Ecology and the Environment • Write a paragraph to explain what you already know about ecology and the environment. Think about what you know about: • What things make up an environment • Classifications of things in the environment / types of organisms • Types of relationships between organisms in an environment • Things all organisms need in their environment

  8. Today’s Schedule March 22, 2011 Homework: Science News Report • Agenda: • Ecology Paragraph • Nature Walk Card Sort and Definitions • Nature Walk Card Labels • Essential Questions • What types of organisms interact in our local environment?

  9. Nature Walk Card Sort March 22, 2011 • Examine each of the cards you created. • With your partner, sort the cards into groups. Select your criteria to determine what types of groups you will use with your partner. • Page 83 – Record the groups you used and the names of each card in the group.

  10. Categorizing the Environment March 22, 2011 In science there are some major groups that all things can be categorized into. The first major grouping is that items are BIOTIC or ABIOTIC. Page 84: Record the following definitions. BIOTIC factors – living or once living things (plant, animal, bacteria, dead animal) ABIOTIC factors – non-living things (rock, temperature, water, sunlight)

  11. Categorizing the Environment March 22, 2011 Separate your cards into a biotic and abiotic pile. Label with back of each card as biotic or abiotic. BIOTIC factors – living or once living things (plant, animal, bacteria, dead animal) ABIOTIC factors – non-living things (rock, temperature, water, sunlight)

  12. Categorizing the Environment March 22, 2011 BIOTIC factors are categorized based on the way they get food. All organisms are considered PRODUCERS or CONSUMERS. Page 84: Record the following definitions. PRODUCER – any organism capable of making its own food (plants, blue-green algae.) CONSUMER – any organism that eats other organisms for food (rabbit, ant, lion.)

  13. Categorizing the Environment March 22, 2011 Separate your biotic cards into a producer and consumer pile. Label with back of each card as producer or consumer. PRODUCER – any organism capable of making its own food (plants, blue-green algae.) CONSUMER – any organism that eats other organisms for food (rabbit, ant, lion.)

  14. Categorizing the Environment March 22, 2011 CONSUMERS can be broken into many categories based on the types of organisms they eat. These include: Herbivore Omnivore Carnivore

  15. Categorizing the Environment March 22, 2011 CONSUMERS can also be examined based on the types of relationships they share. A common relationship in nature is the PREDATOR / PREY relationship. Page 84: Record the following definitions. PREDATOR – any organism that preys (hunts and consumes) on another organism. PREY – the organism being hunted and eaten. Example: A lion hunts and eats a gazelle.

  16. Categorizing the Environment March 22, 2011 Examine your consumer cards. Are any of your examples predators or prey? Label with back of each card as predator or prey. Some organisms can be both. For each labeled predator, give an example of what it would prey on. For each labeled prey, give an example of a predator that would eat it. PREDATOR – any organism that preys (hunts and consumes) on another organism. PREY – the organism being hunted and eaten.

  17. HW – Science News Report March 22, 2011 • Create a news story about the things you saw outside today. Be sure to include a headline, the story, byline, and a graphic.
