  2. WORDS WITH SILENT LETTERS • Many of our words come from the Old English language. • Some of these words have silent letters such as g, k, w, b • Examples: • gnat, gnome, knee, knot, • write, wrist, lamb, thumb

  3. NOT SO SILENT! • Today, these words have silent letters, but “back in the day,” all the letters were pronounced! • Just for fun…read these words pronouncing all the letter sounds: • gnat, gnome, knee, knot, • write, wrist, lamb, thumb “Mom! I fell down and hurt my knee!”

  4. DIGRAPH ph • Di and Bi = 2 (A bicycle has 2 wheels) • When we see 2 letters together making only 1 sound, we call it a digraph. • digraph phmakes the (f) sound. Examples: graph, phrase, phone, gopher

  5. SPELLING WORDS • gnat wrinkle graph • gnarl wrist phone • gnome wrong phrase • sign write gopher • knee thumb • knock lamb • knot plumber • knit • knife
