  1. Silvicultural Research on AFRI Demo Plantings Jose Zerpa GWR Silvicultural Researcher June 13th , 2012

  2. Introduction • Poplar production as a bioenergy feedstock in the Pacific Northwest will entail regeneration management through coppice in short rotations. • The complete removal of above-ground biomass at higher frequencies may pose a challenge for the productivity and long-term site sustainability of these systems. • Field trials in two representatives and distinct growing zones of the region have been established to determine the effects of the following variables on poplar productivity: • Planting density • Harvesting time • Alder intercropping (Heilman and Stettler, 1985)

  3. AFRI Demonstration Plantings (2012)

  4. Hayden, ID (Xeric Site - 26” AVG ppt.) 59 acres

  5. Jefferson, OR (Mesic Site - 53” AVG ppt.) 84 acres

  6. Biomass Production Study • RCBD (split-plot factorial treatment design) • 4 Replications • 2 Harvest Seasons (Active: June-July, Dormant: Jan) • 2 planting densities (1089 tpa: 10’x4’; 2178 tpa: 10’x2’) • 2 Alder intercropping (yes, no)

  7. Biomass Production Study

  8. Biomass Production Study • Study layout for Hayden, ID

  9. Biomass Production Study Intercropped Alder

  10. Biomass Production Study • Harvest (years 2 and 5) • Response Variables: • Routine soil nutrient analysis and plant available N from surface horizon, at establishment, and at years 2 and 5. • Survival at years 1, 3, and 6. • Height and diameter at years 1, 2, and 5. • Biomass yield at years 2 and 5. • Coppicing ability at years 3 and 6 (Number of sprouts, vigor).

  11. Other Research Trials at AFRI Plantings • Alder Hybridization Study (Mesic) • Poplar Clonal Comparison (Mesic & Xeric) • Endophytes Study (Mesic) (collaboration with U of Idaho)
