    What every 4-H Advisor should know!

The Pledges Each meeting should start with the American Pledge and the 4-H Pledge I Pledge: my head to clearer thinking, my heart to greater loyalty, my hands to larger service, my health to better living, for my club, my community, my country and my world.   5. 4-H Advisors Make it Happen! Over 24,000 adults in Ohio are 4-H advisors Lawrence County has over 130 approved adult advisors Partners
  6. 4-H Defined 4-H is a non-formal, educational, youth development program that is offered to youth age 5 and in kindergarten to 19, regardless of their race, color, creed, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, gender, or handicap.

  8. 4-H Advisor Requirements Club advisor must complete the 4-H volunteer application process Application, background check, finger printing, interview and attend an advisor training Check at the office to see if all of your paperwork is turned in. If everything is not turned in by April 1stthen your volunteer status will be suspended until everything is completed.

Role of the Advisor Insure the safety and well being of the youth involved in the 4-H program Be a positive role model (good sportsmanship) Respect, adhere and enforce rules, policies and guidelines established by the County 4-H program Act in a responsible manner regarding animals, machinery, vehicles and equipment
  10. Role Of the Advisor Report any threats, abuse or signs of neglect Be the resource person for the members in your club Copy and hand out all rules; general, livestock, horse, and still project Make sure all paperwork is filled out and turned in on time Relay information in newsletters on to your members

  13. 4-H Club Requirements All 4-H clubs must have at least 5 members from two different families. All 4-H clubs must have one approved 4-H Volunteer (Advisor) approved by the Lawrence County OSU Extension office All clubs need to have an established constitution and by-laws or club rules on file with the Lawrence County OSU Extension office All clubs need to hold at least 6 club meetings each year not including QA/Skillathon and tag-ins
  14. 4-H Club Requirements All club Enrollment forms must be turned into the Lawrence County Extension office by April 1st Yearly club activities should include at least one educational activity, one community service activity and one social or recreational activity. Clubs should encourage parent and family involvement Clubs are encouraged to participate in at least one county activity (candy bar sale, 4-H camp, etc.) Clubs are encourage to participate in officer training, 4-H camp, 4-H fund raisers, teen activities, state and county scholarships and trips as well as competitions.

Club By-Laws Agreed upon rules for the way the club will function All members of the club need to agree upon these rules By-laws reduce conflict and misunderstandings Should include where club meets, who may join, what officers the club elects, what criteria are used for a member to remain in good standing Non discrimination statement All members, leaders and parents should be given a copy Should be reviewed annually Approved by the County Extension Director or Program Assistant and a copy filed at the Extension office
  16. 4-H Member Requirements All 4-H members MUST be at least 8 years of age AND ENROLLED in 3rd grade as of Jan. 1 of the current year. All members MUST complete a 4-H enrollment form listing the 4-H projects they plan on completing for the current 4-H year. Enrollment forms are to be collected by the 4-H Leader and turned into the Lawrence County OSU Extension office by April 1st.
  17. 4-H Member Requirements Members MUST complete at least one 4-H project to be considered active for the year. Members MUST agree to follow club rules, constitution and by laws, meeting all club deadlines and participate in club activities.

  19. 4-H Club Meeting Learning by doing Recreation (group building) 15-20 min. Business (group decisions) 15-20 min. Education (program & activity) 40-60 min.

  21. Cross County Lines Members may only be enrolled in 4-H in one county. Enrollment must be in their county of residence unless cross county lines forms are completed and signed by Educators in both counties. Any members in FFA in Gallia County and 4-H in Lawrence County may only take market projects to one county fair. They may take a breeding project to the second county fair. Tobacco projects are considered market projects.
  22. Cross County Lines Forms MUST be turned in by February 28th each year Requests will be processed in March Guidelines in which you can qualify for cross county line enrollment
  23. Fair Forms and Paperwork!!! Drug Use Notification Forms must be completed on all animals going through the fair livestock sale. A health certificate and pseudorabies test from a veterinarian will be required for any breeding swine purchased outside of Ohio. Scrapie Tags are required on all sheep and goat projects. Sheep need to have their tags by the sheep weigh in date.
  24. Chartering All clubs must complete the chartering process in order to be recognized by the county, state and national 4-H programs Once chartered, clubs can apply for an EIN Number via the IRS.
  25. Club accounts Club should have a checking account Account should have two signatures required (club advisor, parent, older member) Clubs should establish a minimum carry over for their account Those members that raise the money should spend the money

Club Accounts Accurate records MUST be kept and a treasurer’s report should be given at every meeting Club treasury should be audited annually by a club committee If a club disbands funds must be donated to a local 4-H cause clubs are required to submit a financial report annually to the Lawrence County OSU Extension Office
  27. EIN Numbers Apply Via IRS Simple Process Report assigned EIN to Extension Office Maintain records and reporting as needed
  28. Events Held Before The Fair Clothing and Nutrition Judging Dog Show Horse Clinic Horse PAS (State Fair Qualifier) Animal Tag-in/tattoo 4-H Camp
  29. Tag-in/Tattoo Dates Steer: December 18th 8-11am Hog/Lamb/Goat: April 30th 8-11am Feeder Steer/Heifer and Rabbit: June 4th 7-9am
  30. Quality Assurance Quality Assurance is mandatory to take breeding and market livestock (cattle, dairy cattle, swine, sheep, dairy or meat goats, rabbits, and poultry) to the Lawrence County Fair. If you miss the quality assurance in Lawrence County it is your responsibility to go to another counties quality assurance. Check the newsletters, website and facebook for dates of all quality assurances.
  31. Lawrence County Fair Please note Lawrence County Fair is a terminal sale. Steer, Swine, Sheep, Goat, Rabbits and Chicken market projects sold at the fair will be sent to slaughter. All exhibitors must show their own project unless prior approval is given by the fair board!
