  1. Equilibrium 5/22/14 THE Isaiah Stubbs (GREATNESS) aka ZEH Irmak, Lindsay, Lily, Elijah, Muhammad, Pooja, & Romario

  2. Chemical Equilibrium • Chemical equilibrium- the state in which forward and reverse reactions balance each other when they occur in equal rates • Le Chatelier’s Principle- states that if a stress is applied to a system at equilibrium, the system shifts in the direction that relieves the stress

  3. Stresses • Three stresses of a chemical system: • Temperature change • Pressure change • Concentration of products and reactants • If a concentration of a substance is increased, equilibrium will shift to the opposite side. • If a concentration of a substance is decreased, equilibrium will shift to that side

  4. Equilibrium Constant Keq= (C) / (A) (B) Keq>1 = more products than reactants Keq<1 = more reactants than products Can only be gas or aqueous, can’t be a solid! c a b

  5. Temperature Ex: N2+ 3H2 2NH3 +(Heat) - If you increase temperature, there will be more reactants produced.

  6. Concentration N2 + 3H2 2NH3 • If you add more N2 or H2 you get more products: • N2+N2+ 3H22NH3 • If you remove N2 or H2 you get more reactants: • 3H 2NH3

  7. Pressure • Only applies to gases and aqueous solutions • To calculate moles of each side, add the coefficients on the reactants side together, and the coefficients on the products side together • If you increase pressure on the side with more moles, equilibrium will shift to the other side
