  1. Experiment An experiment is the act of conducting a controlled test or investigation

  2. Begin with a question or topic Flowering plants – how to get them to produce more flowers

  3. Hypothesis (testable statement) If I talk to my plants then they will produce more flowers than plants that are ignored.

  4. Materials • List all the materials used in experiment • Include amounts, sizes, numbers Example 2 – 1” marigold plants ½” of dirt per plant 2 – 4” Styrofoam cups Etc.

  5. Variable • Something that may change during an experiment. • Controlled variable – what is NOT changed during an experiment (stays same) • Independent variable – something that is deliberately changed during an experiment • Dependent variable – the outcome/result (or what has been changed) by the independent variable

  6. Controls – • Same • Amount of dirt, sunlight, water, type of plant, amount of time, same location • Independent variable • Only one is used (different) • Talk to one plant for 1 minute every day • Dependent variable • Result (what changes if any in the amount of flowers)

  7. Data collection • Graphs • Charts • Notes • Drawings

  8. Conclusion • What happened? • Did the experiment prove or disprove your hypothesis

  9. Now you will set up a lab report foldable
